Abstract
Aim. The study aimed to find determinants of physical activity (PA) assessed by the International Physical Activity Questionnaire IPAQ.
Material and methods. Study group: 249 women, age 18–30 (AVG 22.8, SD 2.7), students of the College of Engineering and Health. IPAQ (short version) and proprietary questionnaire were performed, the stature and body mass of the respondents were measured.
Results. The total level of students PA was 2524 MET-min/week, including walking 1463, vigorous activities 540, and moderate 521. High-level PA was found more often in those doing sports, but not in connection with work or daily activities (p < 0.0001). Students with high PA also practised sports in the past, not strictly during PE lessons (p < 0.05) and come from homes where the sport was practised by parents or grandparents (p < 0.001).
Conclusions
1. Among students of speciality cosmetology at the College of Engineering and Health: 17.67% have low, 52.21% moderate, and 30.12% high level of physical activity.
2. The subgroup with a high level of physical activity in the studied group is those who are regularly playing sports. The level of activity is not related to full-time or part-time studies or combining studies with work.
3. People who in addition to PE in the primary school, middle or high school were playing sport, also practice sports more often during their studies.
4. The pattern transmitted in the family is significant – often in adult life sport is practised by people whose grandparents or parents also played sports regularly.
