Adam Trzyna, Anna Brachman, Tomasz Łosień, Grzegorz Sobota – Influence of exoskeleton therapy on gait parameters in patients with cerebral palsy. Fizjoterapia Polska 2022; 22(2); 194-201

Abstract
Objective. The study presents the results of research aimed at assessing the influence of exoskeleton therapy on the basic spatiotemporal and kinetic parameters of gait in patients with cerebral palsy (CP).
Material and methods. Seventeen patients with CP (II GMFCS) participated in the study. The training program lasted 8 weeks with a two-week break in the middle of the entire cycle (3 weeks – 2 weeks off – 3 weeks). The training session lasted 90 minutes. The patients trained wearing an exoskeleton (Ekso GT) under the supervision of a qualified physiotherapist. The gait analysis was performed on the Zebris FDM-TDL treadmill for the preferred and maximum tolerated velocity, before and after the entire training program.
Results. When walking at maximum tolerated velocity, participants improved velocity, step rate, step length, gait cycle length, and gait cycle time. Contact times have significantly changed for the forefoot, midfoot, and heel areas. The stance phase time for the left and right sides decreased significantly. The above-mentioned parameters for the preferred velocity did not change statistically significantly.
Conclusions. Positive changes were observed for conditions more difficult than the preferred gait. More research is needed in different configurations of intensity, volume and duration of the entire rehabilitation cycle to optimize the rehabilitation program and maximize outcomes.

Abstract
Objective. The objective of this study was to identify the correlation between body composition of children with cerebral palsy and the degree of spasticity in the muscles of the lower limbs.
Material and methods. The study included a group of 59 independently walking children aged 8 to 16 with spastic diplegia. The control group included 59 children without central movement disorders – students at Primary School No. 25 in Sosnowiec. The research included: 1) assessment of body composition and its components using the TANITA MC-780 S MA scale; 2) assessment of the degree of spasticity according to the modified Ashworth scale; 3) calculations of BMI indices in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and BMI OLAF developed by the Children’s Memorial Health Institute in Warsaw.
Results. The most severe spasticity, both in the right and left lower limbs, was observed in the extensors of the ankle joint. In turn, the mildest spasticity was observed in the group of flexors of the knee joint of the right and left lower limbs. The greater the degree of spasticity in the muscles of the lower limbs, the greater the deficit in fat-free mass and muscle mass in the lower limbs.
Conclusions. Children with CP have deficits in terms of muscle mass. The deficit of muscle tissue depends on the degree of spasticity of the proximal muscle groups of the lower limbs.

Maciej Śliwiński, Paulina Ostrowska, Rita Hansdorfer-Korzon – Kinematic disorders of the scapula in a group of women after mastectomy – a systematic review. Fizjoterapia Polska 2022; 22(2); 150-167

Abstract
Background. Breast cancer is the most common neoplastic disease in the group of women. In terms of negative consequences of oncological treatment, disorders of the kinematics of the shoulder complex and coexisting disorders of motor control are also distinguished. Aim of the study. The aim of the study is to systematize information on motor disorders in terms of scapula kinematics in the area of the shoulder complex during upper limb elevation movements in the group of women after mastectomy. Methods. The systematic review is based on the search results of Science Direct, Ebsco, and PubMed. The systematic review was performed on the basis of PRISMA guidelines. Results. The analysis of the works showed the existence of disorders in the kinematics of the scapula in the group of women after mastectomy. In this group of patients, the scope of upwards rotation of the scapula during the elevation of the upper limb, its lowering, and functional movements was limited. Conclusions: The analysed articles indicate the existence of disorders of the scapula kinematics in the group of women after mastectomy. The obtained results indicate the necessity of implementing routine evaluation and motor re-education in the field of scapula kinematics disorders in the process of comprehensive rehabilitation in this group of patients.

Fayka E Ali, Fahima M Okeel, Amir A Gabr, Amel M Yousef, Abdullah M. Al-Shenqiti, Mohamed Ahmed Elbedewy – Effect of whole body vibration versus high intensity interval training on interleukin-6 in obese post-menopausal women. Fizjoterapia Polska 2022; 22(2); 144-149

Abstract
Background. Menopause and aging affect the health of obese women, provoking accumulation of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and inflammation. Obesity leads to major health problems, which increase the risk of debilitating diseases that lead to death. Thus, loss of weight and VAT are primary goals of treatment through modifications of dietary habits and exercise. Purpose of the study. This study was conducted to determine which is more effective on interleukin- 6 (IL-6) levels for obese post-menopausal women, whole body vibration training (WBVT) or high intensity interval training (HIIT). Subjects and methods. 45 post-menopausal obese women diagnosed with higher level of IL-6, their body mass index (BMI) > 30 kg/m2 and waist/hip ratio (W/H ratio) > 0.8 participated at this study. Women were divided randomly into 3 equal groups in numbers; Group (A) followed low caloric diet (1200 Cal), Group (B) received WBVT and Group (C) received HIIT. Both groups (B & C) followed the same low caloric diet as group (A). Evaluation was done before and after 3 months of treatment, through measuring weight, BMI, waist as well as hip circumferences, W/H ratio and IL-6 levels. Results. The three groups revealed statistically significant improvements (P < 0.05) in all parameters after treatment compared to baseline. Also, there were statistically differences between the 3 groups after treatment, with the group (B) more favorable than groups (A & C). Conclusion. WBVT is more effective than HIIT on reducing inflammation via reducing IL-6 level in obese post-menopausal women.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.56984/8ZG0DE0LR

Abstract
Objective. The main objective of this study was to determine the effect of wearing a Chêneau brace on the quality of life of patients with idiopathic scoliosis.
Methodology. The study used a short questionnaire that consisted of 12 questions – 4 questions about demographics and 8 questions about quality of life. The investigated aspects of life included difficulty in performing daily activities, feelings of embarrassment, sleep discomfort, irritability, and patients’ perceived benefits of this treatment procedure. Questionnaires were filled during follow-up visits. The study was conducted on a group of 30 patients aged 9–16 years treated for at least 6 months. Among the respondents there were 22 females and 8 males.
Results. Despite the small study group, the results of the statistical analysis confirmed the hypothesis that the brace significantly affects the quality of life of patients and has a greater impact on the quality of life of the female gender due to the disruption of aesthetics and the associated sense of shame. An association was observed between the sense of shame related to wearing a brace and the desire to “hide” the brace under clothing, as well as the perception of the benefits of wearing a brace and a lower sense of shame.
Conclusion. In the processes of rehabilitation and treatment of the patient with idiopathic scoliosis, a holistic approach that considers not only activities related directly to physiology, but also to patients’ well-being and quality of life is important.
