DOI: https://doi.org/10.56984/8ZG20A311

Abstract
Introduction. Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is one of the most common rheumatoid diseases. In the course of this disease, the musculoskeletal system is mainly involved. The treatment process should take into an account the patient’s current general condition, disease progression and function.
Aim of the study. The purpose of this study was to attempt to assess the effect of physical activity on the functional status of patients with ankylosing spondylitis based on the available literature.
Material and methods. The available literature was analyzed based on English-language databases PubMed, ScienceDirect and others, using the Google Scholar search engine. Seventeen articles were analyzed out of 55 retrieved by the above method.  Publications published up to 10/10/2023 were used as search criteria using the following keywords: ankylosing spondylitis, physical activity, physiotherapy.
Results. For the most part, physical activity performed by patients with AS appears to be effective in improving their function. Additional studies are needed to determine more clearly the effect of unguided exercise on this group of patients.
Conclusions. Contemporary studies indicate that patient-performed physical activity mostly appears to be effective in the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis. The results of studies on the effectiveness of the use of unguided exercise by patients are divergent. They indicate both high and low effectiveness depending on the study conducted. Further research in this area is needed to draw more firm conclusions.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.56984/8ZG20AR1N

Abstract
Introduction. Too many people avoid regular physical activity, and therefore various strategies are taken to increase their motivation. In recent years, exercising with the use of console games, i.e. exergames, has gained popularity.
Material & Methods. The study included patients referred for an early post-hospital inpatient rehabilitation. All subjects participated in endurance training on cycle ergometers and in fitness exercises (dynamic, stretching, coordination, balance) with elements of resistance training 5 times per week. In the test group, the rehabilitation program was complemented with training with ActivLife equipment. Training sessions took place every day, 5 times a week. They involved training program consisting of 7 exercises that develop motor abilities: coordination, strength and balance in the form of activities similar to traditional exercises – squats, lateral flexion, three-plane movements of the upper limbs and torso deflections in sagittal plane. Trainings lasted from 15 to 20 minutes.
Results. After rehabilitation significant improvement of exertion tolerance was observed in patients in both groups in the following tests: 6MWT [m] – test group: 369 vs 426, p < 0.05, control group: 341 vs 434, p < 0.001; test of strength of the muscles in the lower limbs [number of repetitions/30s] were: test group: 11.4 vs 13.6, p < 0.001, control group: 9.9 vs 13.1, p < 0.001 and in the Up&Go Test [s]: test group 7.8 vs 6.7, p < 0.01, control group 8.4 vs 7.3, p < 0.01.
Conclusions. Interactive console games are evaluated by cardiac patients as an attractive, safe, and useful method of exercising. Training with the use of the ActivLife equipment has proved to be as effective as traditional exercises.

Damian Durlak – Physiotherapy work with transgender individuals . Fizjoterapia Polska 2023; 23(4); 36-40

DOI: https://doi.org/10.56984/8ZG20AF58

Abstract
Transgenderism is a difficult issue in medicine, although it has accompanied humans almost since the beginning of mankind. It includes transsexualism – incompatibility of mental sex and registered sex. Transgender people seek to change their gender through hormone therapy and surgery. In their work, physiotherapists may encounter transgender people at various stages of therapy. In order to avoid causing additional psychological burden for transgender patients, it is necessary for physiotherapists to know the specifics of transsexualism and the issues they should pay attention to while practicing their profession. The aim of the work is to show what transgenderism is and how a physiotherapist should work with transgender people.

Abstract
This study examined the extent of compliance towards HEP among subjects undergoing physiotherapy sessions in selected clinical settings. The findings of this study would provide insights on the perceived enablers and barriers that influence compliance towards prescribed home exercises.
Methodology. This qualitative inquiry study interviewed twenty subjects – 12 males and 8 females under physiotherapy care at various outpatient musculoskeletal rehabilitation at selected private hospitals and physiotherapy clinics located in the states of Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan of Malaysia. Subjects’ responses on the perceived opinions and experiences with prescribed home exercises were audio recorded through a semi-structured interview. The responses obtained were analysed further using keyword coding and content analysis.
Results and Analysis. Self-motivation, determination and commitments are the best-explored enablers for active involvement. Barriers that significantly lead to disengagement in home exercises among the participants of this study includes lack of time, work commitments, personal characteristics, disease nature or injury status and ineffective exercise prescriptions.
Conclusion. Content analysis of the recorded responses revealed that the predictors of compliance to home exercises is multifactorial. This study provides a baseline data for understanding the perceived enablers and barriers towards participation in home exercises; these findings will aid the health care professionals in implementing the measures to maximize compliance level among patients undergoing physiotherapy.
Highlights
• Compliance to home exercises are affected by various factors
• Lack of time, work commitments and injury status affect the home exercise compliance
• Self-motivation is the most important enabler for the compliance to HEP
• Nature of the disease affects compliance to HEP

S. Jandziś, E. Puszczałowska-Lizis, Maciej Łuczak – Edward Madeyski’s pioneering activities for the development of physiotherapy, physical education and hygiene in Lviv in the years 1870-1906. Fizjoterapia Polska 2018; 18(4); 130-136

Abstract
The authors, based on source materials and a few studies, present the activities of Edward Madeyski for the development of physiotherapy, physical education and hygiene in Lviv in the years 1870-1906. This doctor, by profession, and a passionate promoter of gymnastics, physiotherapy, hygiene, dietetics and healthy lifestyle, founded the theoretical basics of physical education. He represented the health-and-hygiene school, was a supporter of “rational gymnastics”, published the first Polish manuals for teaching gymnastics in schools. The main aim of the article is to present E. Madeyski’s little-known activity in the field of physiotherapy which he had been practicing since 1870 in his own Orthopedic Gymnastics Center in Lviv. Therein he treated children with musculoskeletal disorders, mainly with spinal curvatures, with the help of physical factors (therapeutic gymnastics, massage, orthopedic supports). Authors also present E. Madeyski’s activities as a teacher and promoter of physical education and hygiene in Galicia at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. His work gave rise to the development of the theory of physical education, gymnastics specialists training and the activity of orthopedic and gymnastic facilities. In recognition of his merits for many years of medical, pedagogical and scientific activity in 1889, the emperor awarded the title of professor to him.

Abstract
Purpose. The purpose of this survey was to examine students’ satisfaction about physical therapy education in 3 Jordanian universities in addition to determining their perspective on some of the issues related to the profession before and after graduation and entering the working field. Method: An online survey accessed through a hyperlink was directed to 4th year (final year) physical therapy students who are currently studying in Jordanian universities through their virtual social network groups. The link was posted on the main student’s virtual social network groups of the three universities; it also included a message asking participants to share the link with their physical therapy peers to complete the survey. Result: 85% of responders reported that being a physical therapy student has significantly influenced their life. 76% of responders reported that studying physical therapy has positively influenced their social environment. 84% of responders reported that including a fifth year for residency is more effective. Conclusion: our survey results indicate that students are generally satisfied with the quality of education they are receiving, there is some lack in equipment, and salaries are very low post graduation. Those issues addressed in this study will be the leading point for coming studies trying to investigate what are the reasons for such deficiencies and how they can be fixed.
