Description of his university studies is pointed out. His actMties professional and scientific at the tuberculosis sanatorium in Goerbersdorf are also outlined. He was the head of the department of internal diseases and the laryngological outaptient clinic at the St. Spirit Hospital in Warsaw, he was a good teacher of many later distinguished Polish laryngologists and internists. His main work in three volumes „Clinical Lectures on Respiratory System Diseases” and its repercussions in Poland and abroad is pointed out. His visits to health resort Nałęczów at 1881 – 1885 are reported. The state of this health resort in the beginning of the eighties ofXIX century, the important part of Fortunat Nowicki (1834-1885) in the origin of health resort are described in more detail. His versatile actMty leaded to building of baths, water institution, koumiss institution. The Sokołowski’s meetings in Nałęczów with many personages: Bolesław Prus, famous writer, humorist, story teller, Henryk Sienkiewicz, also famous writer, rather solitary, Ignacy Paderewski, composer, the professor of consen/atory, Wacław Szymanowski, journalist, staff member of „Kurjer Warszawski” („Warsaw Daily”), Franciszek Kostrzewski, painter, drawer, painter of water-colours, caricaturist, jester, are desribed widely. The Sokołowski^ journey to Yienna, his visit at Wilhelm Winternitz’s hydropathic institution are also described. The important part of Alfred Marcin Sokołowski in the development of this health resort especially at pulmonology and laryngology, his organizing achie-vements in personnel schooling, establishment of indications on hyropathy and electrotherapy are also reported.

Abstract
Introduction. Balneotherapy is a complex therapeutic treatment. Radon treatment is a widely used procedure in musculoskeletal disorders. Clinical evaluation proves this form of therapy to be very beneficial for health. The evaluation of metabolic changes resulting from the influence of balneo treatments with radon waters is difficult to interpret and gives rise to many controversies.
Aim. The aim here was to evaluate changes in the hemoglobin level in patients undergoing complex spa treatment, and the effect of low doses of ionizing radiation from radon waters.
Materials and methods. The study group was comprised of patients undergoing complex spa treatment with radon water, peloid therapy, exercise therapy and kinezytherapyduring a twenty-one day rehabilitation stay. Hemoglobin levels were measured prior to therapy and after eighteen days of treatment. Research was comprised of n = 35 patients (24 female and 11 male) suffering from peripheral and spinal joint pain caused by degenerative disease or disc herniation. Age ranged from 47 – 63 years, and the mean age was 56.5. The control group consisted of fifteen subjects (9 male and 6 female) between the ages of 50 and 62 and the mean age of 54.2. Both groups were subject to the same inclusion and exclusion criteria and test procedures.
Results. There were no statistically significant changes between the research and control group in regard to hemoglobin levels. The results were not statistically significant when compared between the two study groups.
Conclusions. 1. The comprehensive spa treatment with peloid therapy, exercise therapy, kinezytherapy and low doses of ionizing radiation from radon waters did not affect the concentration of hemoglobin. 2. Future research should investigate a larger population and separate the elements of spa therapy.

Abstract

Introduction Beneficial therapeutic results can be achieved by the use of exercise therapy, kinesiotherapy and low doses of ionizing radiation. Such treatment decreases pain, increases physical capacity and fitness, and stimulates the immune system. An increase in the antioxidant capacity of the body is also one of the positive changes.
Aim This research aimed to evaluate the effect of spa treatment on the antioxidant capacity of the body.
Materials and methods Research was comprised of 120 patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the limbs and spine. The first group were treated in the Przerzeczyn-Zdroj spa, and therapy lasted 21 days. Total Antioxidant Status (TAS) was measured prior to therapy and after 18 days of treatment. The trials were non-randomized, and 85 subjects were evaluated. Group B, assessed in Świeradów, was comprised of 34 patients. The subjects underwent comprehensive therapy with the use of medicinal radon and radon-sulphide water. The results were statistically analyzed.
Results The research confirmed the body’s sensitivity to antioxidant capacity when undergoing spa therapy. There was an increase in values of TAS concentration in both groups.
Conclusions Research proved the beneficial influence of spa therapy on the total increase of the antioxidant capacity of the body.
2. Changes in TAS concentration observed in the examined groups led to the conclusion that the changes resulted from comprehensive spa treatment.

J. Kuciel-Lewandowska, M. Paprocka-Borowicz, W. Laber, M. Kowal, K. Szarejko, K. Aleksandrowicz – Assessment of the level of anxiety, depression and pain intensity in patients with osteoarthritis of the limbs through spa treatment. FP 2016;16(2);64-72

Abstract
Introduction. Chronic pain as a consequence of osteoarthritis of the limbs  is one of the factors provoking anxiety-depressive disorder. Both pain and the anxiety-depressive disorders are factors mutually escalating, which at the same time significantly restrict the mobility and quality of life. Musculoskeletal system diseases represent a serious therapeutic problem. Chronic condition, the lack of improvement in treatment of negative symptoms and inability to return not only to social life but also to work is also a serious economic problem.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of the spa treatment on the anxiety, depression and the pain perception level in patients with degenerative joint disease and osteoarthritis of the spine.
Materials and  methods. The research was conducted before the introduction of complex therapy and after its completion. The range of observations included:
– Assessing the level of anxiety and depression using a standard Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale HADS,
– Assessing pain – VAS pain scale,
– medical and socio-demographic history.
The observation comprised 120 patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the limbs in the Przerzeczyn-Zdroj spa. The study also included  observation of the control group consisting of 21-persons treated on an outpatient basis. During the 21-day stays at the spa there were physical treatments, physiotherapy and natural healing materials used such as peloid mud and medicinal radon-sulphide water. Patients treated in the Rehabilitation Clinic did not undergo balneotherapy.
Results. As a result of the spa therapy and treatments performed on an outpatient basis the levels of anxiety and  depression were lowered whereas the pain intensity level was decreased.
Conclusions. 1. Spa treatment and the treatment conducted on an outpatient basis, lowers the level of pain, anxiety and depression in patients with osteoarthritis of the limbs.
2. As a result of the research it was found that more effective, in terms of reducing the level of pain, anxiety and depression, was the treatment carried out at the spa.
