Abstract
Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of regular physical activity on the level of general fitness and quality of life in women over 60 years of age.
Materials and methods. The study included 36 healthy women (18 training and 18 non-training) over 60 years old, among whom the Senior Fitness Test and the WHOQOL–BREF questionnaire were carried out
Results. The analysis of the U Mann-Whitney test showed statistically significant differences for most of the variables between the study groups (p < 0.05) in the Senior Fitness Test (except for the Arm Bending Test, p = 0.137) in favor of training women. Based on the results of the shortened version of the WHOQOL–BREF questionnaire, it was observed that seniors who attend physical exercises consider their standard of living as significantly better than their non-training peers.
Conclusions.
1) Women over 60 years old who regularly attend physical activities, show significantly higher level of physical fitness compared to inactive peers.
2) Active seniors consider their standard of living to be significantly better than that of non-training women.
3) A high level of physical fitness positively correlates with the overall life quality.

Effects of selected work-related factors on the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders

Streszczenie

Purpose. The aim of the study was to compare the frequency and location of musculoskeletal disorders occurring among office and production workers, and to analyze the relationship between the occurrence of pain and the type of workload, age, gender and Body Mass Index.
Material and methods. The study consisted of 63 randomly chosen office and production workers aged 23-65.
The research was based on the analysis of pain occurrence and characteristics of professional activities.
Results.
There were statistically significant correlations found between: cervical spine pain among women and work in the forced body position and long-term inability to change position, thoracic spine pain and work for over 12 hours a day, repetitive movements, work in a forced position of the body and lifting / carrying heavy loads, lumbar spine and work in a forced body position and lifting/carrying of heavy loads.
Correlation between BMI and age and pain occurrence was not significant.
Conclusions
1. Characteristics of work-related activities determine the location of pain.
2. The most common work-related musculoskeletal pain syndromes concerns lumbar and cervical spine as well as hand’s and wrist’s joints.
3. Occurrence of pain related to the work performed is dependent on gender, but not on the age or BMI of the respondents.
4. Regular physical activity reduces the risk of work-related musculoskeletal pain syndromes.

Body posture in children practicing handball

Abstract
Purpose. The purpose of the study was to establish the influence of practicing handball on body posture of children and to determine any possible asymmetry connected with regular training of this discipline.
Material and methods. The study was conducted among 40 12-year-old children (15 girls and 25 boys) training handball in Students Sport Club Anilana, Sobolowa 1 street, Lodz for at least 3 years. Children undergone body posture assessment according to Kasperczyk’s Point Method.
Results. In the studied group no significant deviations from correct posture were found in terms of head, shoulders, shoulders, chest, abdomen, lumbar lordosis, spine alignment and knees. Only one of the studied children presented significant change in the alignment of thoracic kyphosis and three – in the alignment of foot.
Conclusions. Training handball for at least 3 years enabled to maintain and fix correct body posture among 12-year-olds and did not cause any significant postural asymmetry.

Efficacy of selected physiotherapeutic procedures in the treatment of lumbar spine pain

Abstract
Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of selected sets of physiotherapeutic procedures for pain in the lumbosacral segment caused by degenerative disease.
Materials and Methods. The study involved 45 patients with pain syndromes within the lumbosacral spine, who underwent a series of physiotherapy treatments. The subjects were divided into four groups. Three groups were divided depending on the applied sets of physiotherapy treatments, while the fourth group (comparative) were those taking only non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for the duration of a series of treatments in the remaining groups. The patients were examined using the questionnaire of their own questionnaire, the SF-36 questionnaire (vol.2) of the short questionnaire version (Poland version), Lovett test, Laitinen scale and diagnostic tests (Laseque, Bragard, Thomayer). The tests were carried out immediately before the treatment series and two weeks after its completion.
Results. The subjects were aged 45-65. 71.1% were women and 28.9% were men. 13.3% of people were physically active. Spinal osteoarthritis was the cause of pain in all patients participating in the study. In the research group, a statistically significant difference was found between the results of the severity of pain, the level of muscle strength and the quality of life measured before physiotherapy and 2 weeks after its completion. In 90% of people participating in the procedures, an increase in muscle strength was obtained, whereas in the control group only in 6%. The improvement of the ranges of mobility in the discussed section of the spine concerned 46.6% of the subjects participating in the treatment series. In the comparison group, none of the patients improved their range of motion.
Conclusions. Physiotherapeutic treatments have a positive effect on the reduction of pathological symptoms of the lumbosacral spine. They have a positive effect on improving the quality of life, muscle strength, ranges of mobility and reducing or completely removing pain. Regardless of the applied set of physiotherapeutic treatments, they worked better than the intake of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs by patients.

Analysis of injuries of musculo-ligamentous-skeletal system occurring among handball players and physiotherapy treatment

Abstract

Introduction. Injuries in team games are an inseparable part of today’s sport. For every athlete it is connected with a decrease in exercise capacity, need for medical help and economic consequences. Professional rehabilitation of athletes, after a traumatic event, requires work with a physiotherapist with high skills and extensive experience and the use of modern physical therapy equipment. The lack of one of those factors can lead to further loss of health by the player, prolonged rehabilitation and thus delayed return to the game
Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the type and frequency of injuries occurring among professional female handball players and the type and methods of treatment used after the injury.
Material and methods. The studied group consisted of 19 women aged 18-31 years, playing handball for at least 5 years. All of the subjects played in the first team of Korona Handball Club in Kielce. In the study a diagnostic survey method was used.
Results. The study showed that 100% of players suffered from at least one injury connected to their professional sports activity. Most often the injury occurred while landing – 33.9%, fouls – 21.4% and throws – 19.6%. 12.5% (7) of the occurred traumas required surgery and the remaining 87.5% ended in conservative treatment. In spite of the fully recovery from the injury, a large proportion of the players – 68.4% were feeling discomfort after the resumption of training and during the matches.
Conclusions. The most common injuries of professional handball female players are sprains and dislocations of the lower limbs. Most athletes undergone conservative physiotherapy treatment including kinesiotherapy and wide range of physical therapy modalities.

The use of Rehabilitative Ultrasound Imaging (RUSI) and sonofeedback in the assessment of the activity of transversus abdominis muscle

Abstract

Purpose. The purpose of the study was to evaluate thickness and symmetry of Transversus Abdominis muscle (TrA) during rest and activation with the use of Rehabilitative Ultrasound Imaging (RUSI) and the assessment of sonofeedback effectivness in learning and control of TrA activity.
Material and methods. The study was conducted on 28 healthy subjects (17 women and i 11 men) aged 19-22 years (mean 21±1,08 years). The subjects undergone RUSI assessment considering thickness of TrA in rest and during contraction. Basing on results the Activation Ration and Percent of Muscle Change were calculated.
Results. Mean thickness of TrA in rest was 3,19 mm among women and 4,37 mm among men. During controlled activity thickness of TrA increased by 69% on right side and by 64% on left side and respectively by 70% and 64% among men. The results showed a significant difference in TrA thickness between right and left side at rest and during contraction among men. During sonofeedback recorded thickness of TrA was significantly higher comparing to results without control of sonofeedback. TrA activity was lower in the group with low back pain and it was 64%, while in pain-free group the activity was 72%.
Conclusions.
1. RUSI is an effective method to evaluate the morphology and activity of the Transversus Abdominis muscle at rest and during controlled activation;
2. The decrease in thickness and activity impairment of TrA is related to the occurrence of low back pain;
3. The use of sonofeedback enables significant improvement in activation and equalization of TrA asymmetry.

Occurrence of work-related pain syndromes and injuries due to overload of the musculoskeletal system in physiotherapists

Abstract

Introduction. The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and injuries associated with the physiotherapy profession, as well as to analyze work activities related to professional practice predisposing to injury.
Material and methods. The study was conducted among 150 randomly selected physiotherapists. The questionnaire designed by the authors, included questions about sociodemographic data, work characteristics, the incidence of pain and injury which occurred while performing professional activities, location of the injury and the type of activity during which the injury occurred.
Results. 99% of physiotherapists reported to feel pain associated with performing job activities and 61% had suffered an injury of the musculoskeletal system that was clearly caused by their work. Injuries were most often located in the lumbosacral spine, wrist and hand as well as in the cervical spine.
Conclusions. 1. Musculoskeletal pain and injuries are an important issue among physiotherapists. 2. They are most often located in the lumbosacral spine, wrist and hand as well as in the cervical spine 3.Lifting and moving patients or equipment, performing massage and passive exercises are the most common activities related to pain development and the occurrence of injury. 4. High incidence of work-related pain and injuries results from the insufficient application of ergonomics by physiotherapists, as well as from the inadequate adaptation of the workplace. 5. To maintain and prolong the ability to work in a physiotherapy profession it is necessary to provide an appropriate ergonomics training among physiotherapists and consistent monitoring of compliance with the principles of ergonomics by superiors.
