Abstract
Background. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a motor and postural disorder resulting from permanent brain damage that occurred at an early stage of development. It is the most common cause of disability in children, who grow up to become adults, but their functional performance decreases over time.
Aim. To present the importance of kinesiotherapy in CP patients.
Material and methods. The study included 20 patients (12 women and 8 men aged 20 to 60 years) with CP who participated in motor rehabilitation sessions conducted at the Occupational Therapy Workshop in Sędek and the Comprehensive Rehabilitation and Health Promotion Centre in Raków. Their clinical presentation was dominated by manifestations of motor and postural abnormalities caused by upper motor neuron and corticospinal tract damage. A diagnostic survey was used as the research method. The study used a survey questionnaire that collected information about problems associated with everyday life and functioning of the study patients and assessed their rehabilitation programme.
Results. The results emphasise the role of kinesiotherapy in the rehabilitation of patients with CP. Systematic motor rehabilitation contributed to an improvement in their physical fitness and everyday functioning.
Conclusions. Physiotherapy allows patients to achieve their maximum functional level and prevents the development of complications associated with CP.

Abstract

The aim of the paper was to present the attitude to measurements and exercises performed under isokinetic conditions during physiotherapeutic procedures, based on the literature review and the authors’ experience. The authors discuss basic issues of the physiology of muscles, types of muscle contractions and activity, and changes in muscle tension. They presents the principles of torque value measurement and the assessment of other biomechanical parameters, carried out under conditions of maximal isometric tension tone as well as under dynamic-isokinetic conditions. The exercises performed under isokinetic conditions and isometric (static) conditions are described in various aspects of clinical physiotherapy. Attention is focused on the indications and contraindications to using such kind of tests and exercises in physiotherapy, as related to other branches of medicine.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the impact of early physiotherapy on the dynamics of the recovery of the ability to perform daily activities, improvement in functional status, reduction in neurological deficits and change in the consciousness status in patients following surgical treatment of post-traumatic paracerebral hematomas.
The study material consisted of 86 patients undergoing surgical treatment of post-traumatic paracerebral hematomas. All patients were divided into two groups with the type of kinesitherapy performed as the main differentiating factor.
The grade of neurological deficit was assessed by the International Scale of Muscle Weakness, modified Barthel Index, and Rankin Scale, while consciousness was assessed on the basis of the Glasgow Coma Scale.
The return of lost function in patients undergoing rehabilitation according to selected PNF patterns and elements of Bobath therapy as compared to patients subjected to conventional kinesitherapy was characterized by better dynamics, particularly within the initial days, and progressed at a significantly higher rate. However, no relationship of this kind was observed for the recovery of consciousness. Patients have the highest potential for the return of lost functions in the early postoperative period (days 1-5).
