Zbigniew Janczak, Agnieszka Niemierzycka – Influence of extremely low frequency magnetic field on recuperation. Fizjoterapia Polska 2002; 2(3); 194-198

Abstract
Background. The aim of this research is the evaluation of influence of magnetotherapy and magnetostimulation on human’s body directly after submaximal physical effort. Material and methods. The research was carried over the group of 40 students, that do not actively train any sport. The students were making a physical effort on a cyklometer three times. After every effort the restitution time was defined by moment when pulse returned to preefort measures. Students were always lying in their resting time. Firstly it was a passive type of rest; secondly rest supported by magnetostimulation (Viofor JPS) and thirdly supported by magnetotherapy (legs in MAGNETRONIC MF-10). Parameters of applied magnetic fields were from the group of medical doses. Results. Results of the research have shown that statistically the restitution time supported by magnetostimulation as well as magnetotherapy became significantly shorter.

Bożena Jasiak-Tyrkalska, Bogusław Frańczuk, Jolanta Jaworek, Daniela Mosurska – An evaluation of the effectiveness of two different thermal therapy procedures in the rehabilitation of patients with degenerative changes in the knee joint. Fizjoterapia Polska 2004; 4(2); 157-162

Abstract

Background. The aim of our research was to evaluate and compare the analgesic effectiveness of thermal therapy in conjunction with magnetotherapy and active exercises without weight load to improve the functional efficiency of the knee joint with degenerative changes. Material and methods. The level of pain, range of movement, and strength of muscle groups in the knee joint were tested before and after rehabilitation in 48 patients, divided randomly into two groups of 24 people. Results. In both groups there was a reduction in the average level of reported pain, and in the flexion deficit in the knee joint. No changes were noted in the increase of average muscle strength in the flexors and extensors of the knee. Conclusions. In respect to analgesic action and improvement of function in a knee with degnerative changes, a rehabilitation program that includes local cryotherapy proved to be more effective that a program using Sollux lamp irradiation.

A comparative study of the effectiveness of physicotherapy and pharmacotherapy in the treatment of osteoporosis

Krzysztof Roch Radziszewski, Andrzej Marszałek – A comparative study of the effectiveness of physicotherapy and pharmacotherapy in the treatment of osteoporosis. Fizjoterapia Polska 2004; 4(3); 218-225

Abstract

Background. This article presents outcome in the treatment of osteoporosis using two different therapeutic models. Specifically, traditional pharmacotherapy (bisphosphonians, calcitonine, hormone replacement therapy) is compared with physicotherapy, including kinesitherapy in combination with magnetotherapy and laser biostimulation.Material and methods. We examined a group of 120 women ranging from 47 to 73 years of age, all of whom were at least 2 years after natural menopause. In each case, bone mineral density (BMD) was more than 2.5 standard deviations below the average for young women. The subjects were divided into groups on the basis of the treatment modality: bisphosphonian, intranasal calcitonine, HRT, and physicotherapy. The comparison group consisted of patients who received only calcium and vitamin D3. The experiment lasted for two years.Results. Increased BMD was observed in all groups except the comparison group, though statistically significant improvement occurred only in the bisphosphonian and intranasal calcitonine groups. There was a significant reduction in the tested markers for bone turnover, osteopoiesis, and resorption in all groups. In the physicotherapy group the reduction in bone turnover was more linear, though the largest changes were still seen after the first 6 months. Side effects occurred primarily in the bisphosphonian group, and mainly involved digestive symptoms.Conclusions. Systematic physical exercises, combined with properly chosen physicotherapy, can stimulate processes leading to inhibition of resorption and increased bone mass. Physical agents can thus be useful not only in prevention, but also in the treatment of osteoporosis.

Abstract
Introduction. In the literature, we find many works emphasizing the great role of physical therapy in treatment of spinal disorders. Low-frequency magnetic field therapy is mainly used as one of many elements of complex rehabilitation.
Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of a series of low-frequency magnetotherapy procedures on the limitation of mobility of the lumbar spine, as well as to determine whether the value of BMI and the age of patients affect the obtained result of the mobility range.
Material and methods. 40 people aged 30 to 71 were examined. The mobility was measured on the first and last day of the therapy using a modified fingertip-to-floor test. It was a randomized, single-blind study. Low-frequency magnetotherapy was applied in group A and simulation of the procedure in group B. Statistical analysis was conducted in the Statistica 12 programme.
Results. Differences in results obtained before and after the series of procedures in particular groups of patients were statistically insignificant (p=NS).
Conclusion. Low-frequency magnetotherapy does not affect the mobility range of the lumbar spine. The value of the body mass index has a slight influence on the range of movements, and also there is no relation between the age of the participants in the study and the range of mobility of a given section of the spine.

Individualised low frequency magnetic field therapy, using the example of the de Quervain syndrome

M. Machnia, N. Cichoń, E. Miller: Individualised low frequency magnetic field therapy, using the example of the de Quervain syndrome. FP 2015;15(4);116-122

Abstract
Background. The paper presents a case of treatment of the de Quervain syndrome with low frequency electromagnetic field (PEMF), following a procedure different from those applied to date. A patient with de Quervain syndrome diagnosed in her left hand, had been treated in the typical fashion for several months (immobilisation, pharmacotherapy, physiotherapy, kinesitherapy) without any significant improvement.
Due to the absence of the expected therapeutic effect in terms of manual skills, or abatement of pain, the patient was subjected to PEMF therapy with the use of biofeedback, in order to determine the parameters of the therapy. The therapeutic procedure involved using the ONDAMED device, generating an impulse imitating the functional potential of neural cells with a smooth adjustment of parameters (induction, frequency, time), allowing the use of biofeedback of pulse measured on the radial artery. The diagnostic and therapeutic procedure resulted, after 4 weeks, in an improvement of hand function and cessation of pain. The result of treatment and manner of treatment described in the paper encourage further study into the effect of magnetic impulses of waveforms similar to the functional potential of neural cells and the use of biofeedback in targeted magnetotherapy.
