DOI: https://doi.org/10.56984/8ZG2EF8311

Abstract
Purpose. The study aimed to analyze the relationship between systolic and diastolic blood pressure and cardiovascular capacity in the elderly. Method. This research is an analytical observational study conducted with a cross-sectional approach. The sample involved 43 elderlies with characteristics: age 66.79 ± 4.24; weight 62.4 ± 11.66; and height 157.83 ± 6.77. The blood pressure measurements were carried out using a tensimeter, while the cardiovascular measurements were carried out using a 2-minute step test based on the senior fitness test procedure. Pearson’s correlation test was applied to determine the relationship between cardiorespiratory ability and blood pressure. Results. The Pearson’s data analysis test results showed a negative correlation between cardiorespiratory capacity and systolic blood pressure (r(41) = −0.516, p = < 0.001) and diastolic (r(41) = −0.442, p = 0.003). Conclusion. The higher the cardiorespiratory level in the elderly, the lower the systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Thus, good cardio respiration is known to provide positive benefits in better blood pressure regulation in the elderly. Exercise may be needed so that the elderly obtains good cardiorespiratory fitness and, at the same time, normal blood pressure.

Tahir Masood, Hamid Mehmood – Effects of mind exercises on physical fitness and sport performance in interval trained athletes. Fizjoterapia Polska 2023; 23(1); 74-78

DOI: https://doi.org/10.56984/8ZG07B6AC

Abstract
Aim. To explore effects of additional mind exercises on physical fitness and sport performance in athletes undergoing interval training.
Material and Methods. Thirty athletes were assigned into two equal groups. They either received only interval training or a combination of interval training and mind exercises 6 days/week for 24 weeks. Data was collected at baseline and after 5, 10, 15, 20, and 24 weeks. Interval training comprised speed, endurance, strength, plyometrics, and flexibility components. Data collection comprised demographics, time required to complete 600-meter run, number of push-ups in 1 minute, Illinois agility run test time, Broad jump distance, and number of sit-ups in 1 minute.
Results. Interval training with (P < 0.001) or without (P < 0.01) mind exercises resulted in significant reduction in body mass. Body mass index and 600m runtime reduced while number of push-ups and sit-ups in 1 minute, and agility run time improved in both groups (P < 0.001). After 24 weeks, mind exercises group ran significantly faster (P < 0.001). Mind exercises resulted in longer Broad jump (P < 0.001) compared to interval training alone (P < 0.01).
Conclusions. Interval training caused significant reduction in body mass and lead to significantly improved physical fitness and sport performance. Addition of mind exercises resulted in significantly faster 600m run and longer Broad jump.

Physical fitness of elderly women undertaking active forms of recreation

Małgorzata Proszkowiec

M. Proszkowiec – Physical fitness of elderly women undertaking active forms of recreation. Fizjoterapia Polska 2020; 20(4); 102-112

Abstract
Objective. The arm of this study was aimed to assess the level of physical fitness of Polish women aged between 60 and 75. Women from two groups were selected to participate in the testing program: the first involved subjects who systematically undertake various forms of activity, whereas the second one comprised seniors with a sedentary lifestyle. Each group consisted of 30 subjects.
Methods. The research was carried out using an original questionnaire developed by these authors, and the Fullerton Functional Fitness Test.
Results. The level of physical fitness of investigated seniors who lead an active lifestyle was found to be at a much higher level compared to the subjects from the second group. Conclusion. Regularly implemented activities involving repeated movement patterns have a beneficial effect on the development of motor skills. Systematically followed physical activity forms a component of preventive physiotherapy and prevents the occurrence of chronic diseases.

Abstract

Purpose. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of physical therapy on the fitness and aerobic capacity of female nursing home patients.
Materials and methods. The study included 17 women attending physical therapy sessions and 13 women who were not undergoing any physiotherapy. The age range of the participants was 80-84 years. The assessments used the SPPB and the 6-minute walk test.
Results. The study found statistically significant differences between the two groups with regard to all of the parameters used to assess physical fitness and aerobic capacity. Participants who attended physical therapy sessions showed better results on both tests.
Conclusions
1. Regular physical therapy has a positive impact on the physical fitness and aerobic capacity in comparison to a control group.
2. It is crucial to develop and implement model therapy procedures for nursing home patients to improve their physical fitness and aerobic capacity.

K. Ogrodzka, K. Leśniak, A. Bac, T. Ridan, M. Żak: Evaluation of the effectiveness of two rehabilitation programmes for the patients with the shoulder impingement syndrome. FP 2015;15(4); 42-52

Abstract

Aim. The study aimed to compare two specific programmes of rehabilitation for patients with the shoulder impingement syndrome, as well as to assess to what extent the National Health Service refunded rehabilitation scheme was able to restore the possibility of recovering the function in a shoulder joint, in comparison to the programme of rehabilitation devised and developed by the Authors.
Material and method. The assessment embraced the two groups of patients, 7 in each, all diagnosed with shoulder impingement syndrome. The first group only used the refunded treatments, whereas the second group underwent the Authors’ programme of rehabilitation specifically tailored to address the patients’ individual needs.
Results. Having completed the course of respective rehabilitation programmes, the patients from both groups were found to have increased the range of motion in their shoulder joints, as well as experience an appreciably reduced level of pain when pursuing their daily activities, and also when at rest.
Conclusion. The Authors’ rehabilitation programme proved an appreciably more effective procedure for tackling the shoulder impingement syndrome.
