Abstract
Taking into consideration a frequent occurrence of hypermobility syndrome (12-24% adults in Poland) and its possible health consequences, it is important to perform a specialist screening research in the population of children and adolescents. The aim of the study was to estimate the frequency of occurrence of the joint hypermobility symptoms among the youth and to analyse the significance of the differences in the results of individual tests performed in the two groups. A total of 60 girls and 60 boys at the age of 15 participated in the study. The sample was divided into three mobility types (according to Sachse) based on 13 clinical tests. JHS (hypermobility syndrome) was diagnosed in 10 girls (8.3% of the subjects). The comparison between the two groups of subjects showed statistical significance (p<0.05) for trunk retroflexion, global flexion, passive movement of the thumb towards the forearm and hyperextension in the knee and elbow joints. 1. Gender determines the occurrence of joints hypermobility in healthy children. This refers particularly to: retroflexion and flexion of the trunk, hyperextension of the elbows and knees and the movement of the thumb to the palmar aspect of the forearm. 2. The frequent occurrence of extreme flexibility of passive stabilizers of selected peripheral and spinal joints in the adolescents seems to be an important issue that physiotherapists and physical education teachers should be made aware of. 3. If joint hypermobility is detected, the exercises improving muscle strength and stabilising the joints should be implemented in or der to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injures.
