Abstract
The purpose of the above study was to evaluate the quality of life and the type of late postoperative complications in women after breast cancer surgery. The research group consisted of 30 women who underwent treatment for breast cancer. The women were members of the “Amazons” Post-Mastectomy Women’s Club in Tarnów (50%) and in Kraków (50%). The questionnaire dealt with the quality of life and health and was based on the EORTC QLQ-30 questionnaire. The examination chart determined the range of active movement in the joints of the shoulder girdle, limb circumference, potential contracture of the pectoral muscles, measurement of muscle strength and hand strength. The quality of life in the examined women who underwent mastectomy did not change dramatically. In the research group, the range of movement in the shoulder joint on the side of the operated breast became limited in all directions and similarly, the strength of the analyzed muscles decreased. The upper limb lymphoedema was registered in half of the examined women. Pain and sleep disorders were the two postoperative complications that most strongly affected the quality of life in post-mastectomy women.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a 4-week osteoarthritis rehabilitation program in terms of the amount of change in pain severity, range of motion in the hip affected as well as changes in function subscales as determined by SF-36 Health Survey, version 2 (SF-36v2) both in the total study population and in relation to gender. Correlations between the changes and range of motion and pain indices were also analyzed. The study group comprised 30 patients with hip osteoarthritis participating in a 4-week rehabilitation program. Both active and passive. range of motion (ROM) in the hip joint was assessed Pain severity was measured using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS). Health-related quality of life was determined by means of SF-36 Health Survey, version 2 (SF-36v2) before and after the rehabilitation program. The analysis of mean scores in SF-36v2 function subscales obtained before and after therapy demonstrated major improvements in health-related quality of life subscales except general physical function. Pain severity decreased as suggested by the bodily pain subscale of the SF-36v2 and numerical rating pain scale. Statistically significant changes in active range of motion after therapy compared to the baseline values observed in the total study population as well as in female and male subgroups seem to confirm the effectiveness of physiotherapy for hip osteoarthritis.

A. Marszałek, Z. Płaza, Z. Śliwiński – Quality of life of children with ICP as assessed by parents. Fizjoterapia Polska 2020; 20(4); 6-14

Streszczenie

Introduction. Infantile cerebral palsy should not be treated as a separate disease entity. It is a complex of different symptoms resulting from various etiological factors. It is “a permanent, time-changing disturbance of movement or posture, or movement and posture, with dysfunctions, resulting from permanent, non-progressive brain damage at the stage of incomplete development”. It is estimated that the prevalence of cerebral palsy in Poland is 2.0–2.5 per 1,000 live births.
Objective. Assessment of the quality of life of children with ICP based on the opinions of their parents.
Material and methods. The study uses the method of a diagnostic survey. A group of parents of 25 children with infantile cerebral palsy and, as a control group, parents of 25 healthy children were interviewed. For this purpose, the CHQ-PF 50 child health questionnaire was used to measure the parents’ perceptions of their children’s quality of life.
Conclusions. Infantile cerebral palsy, like any other type of disability, reduces the quality of life. ICP has a negative impact on the functioning of children in society, causing them to feel discomfort in various areas of life.

Abstract

Introduction. The CLEI results in decreased walking ability, which is limiting physical activity due to pain. This is the main factor adversely influencing the quality of life observed in these patients. For these reasons, the most important target of physiotherapists is to reduce physical fitness loss caused by a very low level of physical activity over many years.
The aim of the study was to investigate whether the high-tone power therapy can improve functional abilities patients with CLEI in the gait, and thereby improve their self-assessed quality of life.
Material and methods The study involved 68 patients aged 40-70, who were assigned to one of two groups: the A – main, group and B – control group. Their functional abilities in gait were assessed with the use of the WIQ-Walking Impairment Questionnaire, which evaluated 4 domains: claudication distance, walking speed, claudication capacity, ability to walk steps. A group patients were subjected to a series of high-tone power therapy while in B group all the treatments were simulated.
Results Certain differences were noticed in each domain of the WIQ questionnaire, but significant ones were solely in A group. The most noticeable changes were in pain and cramps of the calf; smaller changes were related to walking distance and speed. The smallest changes were reported in the ability to walk steps. Some changes were also reported in the control group, but they were less conspicuous and only affected some domains of the WIQ questionnaire.
Conclusions The high-tone therapy results in subjective improvement in functional locomotion capacity in all domains of self-assessment of patients. Improving the function of lower extremities is conditioned by the presence of additional factors, which are kind of disorder risk factors.

Z. Śliwiński, M. Śliwa, M. Starczyńska, W. Kiebzak – Quality of life in patients with lumbar spinal pain. FP 2014; 14(2); 26-39

Abstract

In recent years, increasing attention has been drawn to the need of a holistic approach to patients. Studies involving the measurement of the quality of life and taking into consideration not only the physical, but also emotional and spiritual aspects of well-being, have been conducted with increasing intensity over the last few decades. In case of disorders as common as spinal pain syndromes, the measurement of the intensity of pain is particularly important, as these diseases are a scourge for the developing societies. The goal of this study was to present and popularize data on the quality of life. The study included 38 subjects (23 females and 15 males) complaining of lumbar spinal pains. The study group was diverse in many aspects, including age distribution. The studies revealed different levels of quality of live impairment depending on the degree of impairment as the result of the disease. Conclusions based on the survey demonstrate the need to include the quality of life in the rehabilitation process. Measurements of the quality of life provide much information on the patient, their attitude to the disease as well as the rehabilitation process.
