Dariusz Białoszewski, Izabela Korabiewska, Monika Lewandowska, Katarzyna Wasiak – The Usefulness of Hippotherapy in the Rehabilitation of Cerebrally Palsied Children. Pilot Study. Fizjoterapia Polska 2011; 11(2); 175-181

Abstract
Zootherapy has been introduced in recent years as an adjunct approach to traditional physiotherapy in patients with cerebral palsy (CP). Hippotherapy is less popular in Poland compared to other European countries or the USA, with few reports of investigations carried out in accordance with the EBM paradigm. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the usefulness of hippotherapy in comprehensive rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy. The study involved 40 cerebrally palsied children who were randomly divided into two equal-sized groups (A and B). Both groups received home-based rehabilitation according to the Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) method. Group A additionally received hippotherapy. The children’s motor function was determined using the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM).In Group A was 0.02 for ChP=5.226, 1 df. The parameter determined in the study exceeded this critical value, thus allowing the conclusion that the effect of home-based rehabilitation combined with hippotherapy on overall health improvement was statistically significant (p<0.05). In Group B, the right-tailed critical value (p) was 0.429 for Chi2=0.625, 1 df. The parameter determined in the study did not exceed the critical value, thus not allowing the statement that home-based rehabilitation had a significant effect on overall health improvement.1. The study shows significantly better results of rehabilitation in children treated with combination of PNF and hippotherapy. 2. The results indicate the need for randomized prospective studies involving larger test groups.

Fizjoterapia Polska 2012; 12(2); 141-146

Abstract
Background. The parents’ satisfaction with life and their acceptance of their child’s illness are important factors that directly and / or indirectly influence the process of rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of hippotherapy on the level of satisfaction with life and acceptance of illness among parents of children with cerebral palsy. Material and methods. The study was conducted in 2008-2010 among 94 parents of cerebrally palsied (CP) children participating in hippotherapy sessions in Warsaw. The study used an original questionnaire with questions dealing with the effect of hippotherapy on selected psychological factors in the parents. The questionnaire was completed by the parents twice: before and after a one-year hippotherapy course. Two psychometric scales: the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and the Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS), were also used, both adapted for Polish by Juczyński. The results were analyzed statistically.Results. Overall satisfaction with life among the parents increased significantly (p<0.05) during the year-long hippotherapy course. There was also a statistically significant increase in the parents’ acceptance of their children’s condition. Conclusion. Hippotherapy in CP children significantly increases their parents’ satisfaction with life and acceptance of their children’s illness.

Abstract
Objective. The objective of the study was to determine the general level of acceptance for the use of the AfaSystem computer tool to assist in aphasia rehabilitation among Polish patients, as well as to learn patients’ subjective opinions about the positive and negative aspects of working with the program.
Material and methods. 32 patients covered by 2-month therapy using AfaSystem participated in a proprietary survey concerning the level of satisfaction with the use of software in therapy. In the first part of the survey, patients made an overall assessment of the program on a scale of 1 to 5. In the second part, they indicated the most important advantages of such therapy and the difficulties encountered.
Results. Patients indicated that their level of satisfaction with the use of the program was very high. The most important advantages were the increased motivation to exercise, therapy attractiveness, low rehabilitation costs, as well as the ease of use of the program. The disadvantages included limited possibilities of material individualization, the lack of video material and the lack of interactivity.
Conclusions.
1. The use of the AfaSystem computer tool in the rehabilitation process is accepted by patients with post-stroke aphasia.
2. Patients handle the program well and find it attractive.
3. It is advisable to supplement the functionality of the software with high-quality audiovisual materials, extensive individualization of the exercise material, as well as interactivity.

Ocena wydolności oddechowej pacjentów leczonych przewlekłymi dializami. FP 2013; 13(3); 14-21

Abstract

lntroduction: Haemodialysis is used in the treatment of both acute and chronic renal failure as well as in some cases of poisoning. The purpose of haemodialysis is to clear the blood of toxic substances. During a haemodialysis session the body also receives substances necessary for regenerating its buffers and for the compensation of metabolic acidosis, and excess wafer is removed from the body. Despite these beneficial outcomes, most dialysis patients report subjective fatigue at the end of a session which can manifest itself an impairment of respiratory parameters. Material and methods: The study enrolled 21 chronic dialysis patients. The study procedures consisted in carrying out a forced spirometry procedure immediately before a dialysis session and 15 minutes after completion of the session. Results: All spirometric parameters assessed in the study group of 21 patients did not change significantly after a dialysis session. There were slight improvements in FEF50 and FEF25. FVC showed mild deterioration. None of the differences was statistically significant. At the same time, there was a statistically significant correlation between the degree of dehydration (loss of body weight during dialysis) and FVC values (p<0.05). Conclusions: 1. A single dialysis session did not induce significant changes in selected respiratory parameters in the study group. 2. The observed subjective feeling of fatigue following a dialysis session in the study group was not caused by impaired respiratory function.

M. Kłoda, G. Brzuszkiewicz-Kuźmicka, E. Smolis-Bąk, I. Korabiewska, M. Lewandowska, D. Białoszewski – Diagnostics of Balance and Gait Disorders in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease. FP 2017; 17(2); 122-131

Abstract

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, progressing affliction of the human central nervous system. It is one of degenerative diseases and affects mainly the extrapyramidal system, and in particular the substantia nigra of the midbrain.  Along with the axial symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, the other most important ones would include abnormalities of posture and gait. The improper posture has an impact on future problems with locomotion and self-service functions.
Prior to introducing any physiotherapy, there should be carried out a number of tests, which will allow both, quantitative and qualitative assessment the patient’s gait and his or her posture. These tests include among others: gait analysis performed on a treadmill of the ”Zebris” FDM-TDM type, which uses the WinFDM-T data base system, Vicon 460 system for the three-dimensional assessment of gait, Timed Up & Go, 10 MWT or Tinetti tests.
Demographic data indicate the increasing incidence of the Parkinson’s disease, which seems to be due to the gradual lengthening of a human life span. This makes it very important to properly rehabilitate and care for the patients.
As the disease progresses, patients begin to experience discomfort during their daily activities, and in locomotion, and thus their quality of life is being reduced. Here comes the great importance of implemented physiotherapy treatments, which are supposed to maintain, for as long as possible, the patients’ mobility at the level sufficient to enable their independent functioning. Introduced early enough physiotherapy procedures significantly improve gait parameters in patients with the Parkinson’s disease, thus delaying progression of the disease.
