Katarzyna Chojak-Fijałka, Olierd Smoleński – Motor rehabilitation of patients in chronic dialysis. Fizjoterapia Polska 2002; 2(3); 241-244

Abstract
This article describes the problem of physical rehabilitation in patients who are undergoing long-term dialysis, based on recently published information. Physical activity is an important factor which enables patients to maintain and/or improve their health and well-being. Patients who suffer from end-stage renal disease, undergoing continued dialysis, have reduced tolerance of physical effort. In the 1980s physical training was introduced, and the first research was done on its influence on the state of health. The effects of physical training on physical capacity, muscles, the circulatory system, lipid profile, and psychosocial status have been studied. The influence of EPO-therapy on physical capacity with and without exercise has also been assessed. The results indicate that the physical therapy optimizes the health- related quality of life of patients under dialysis.

Robert Walaszek, Tadeusz Kasperczyk, Agnieszka Kaczmarek – Impact of the Salt Cavern Microclimate on Respiratory System Diseases in Elderly People. Fizjoterapia Polska 2009; 9(2); 158-170

Abstract
Background. The present study was conducted in order to determine whether a stay in a salt cavern can be recommended in the treatment of respiratory system diseases in elderly people. A detailed analysis is carried out ofthe impact of the salt cavern microclimate on exertional dyspnoea. Material and methods. The subjects were fifteen persons – seven women and eight men – who, on their doctors’ orders, had taken baths in salt caverns between 2 and 29 January 2007. The patients took three baths a week for a total of 14 baths. The mean age of the women was 65.7 years and that of the men was 66.9 years. A specially designed ąuestionnaire comprising 23 auestions in five thematic categories was used to assess the impact of the salt cavern treatment on respiratory system diseases in the elderly people. The patients filled in the questionnaire twice: before their first visit to the salt cavern on 2 January and after their last session, on 31 January 2007. Results. A four-week treatment in the salt cavern had a beneficial effect in the treatment ofthe respiratory system diseases in the elderly people. The patients noticed positive changes in the functioning of their respiratory system after an average of 5 sessions. These effects were obsen/able as milder symptoms ofthese conditions and reduced incidence of infections. Conclusions. Beneficial changes were noted in the subjects as regards the presence of breathlessness during physical activity and a reduction in the severity of dyspnoea.

Andrzej Lewandowski, Martyna Wasielewska, Ryszard Grucza, Jacek Klawe, Paweł Zalewski – Selected types of work load of male physiotherapists in hospital setting. Fizjoterapia Polska 2010; 10(3); 234-241

Abstract
Background. Physical effort is part and parcel of the work of physiotherapists. The profession is generally associated with relatively strenuous physical work. Men and women perceive the level of physical load similarly. The present work aims to assess exercise loads associated with selected activities performed by physiotherapists working in the hospital setting.Material and methods. Three widely utilised standard therapeutic procedures were selected, namely: passive exercises, individual resistance exercises, and verticalisation and gait education. The study involved young men employed in hospital departments of rehabilitation and neurology. Their physical capacity was measured with the PWC170 exertion test; the intensity of physical effort was assessed indirectly by measuring the heart rate.Results. The male physiotherapists had low physical capacity (3.8 l/min ± σ = 0.63). The intensity of physical effort during the selected standard procedures was low, mean heart rate was HR 106.82 ± σ = 15.41, and maximal oxygen uptake was VO2max=56.60%. Nevertheless, physiotherapists subjectively perceived their duties as strenuous. The results of the present study showed that their work can be classified as strenuous, but only when the principles of hygiene and ergonomics are taken into consideration.Conclusions. Conclusions are drawn regarding the need to keep physiotherapists’ physical capacity at an appropriate level and to establish contraindications to perform standard therapeutic procedures associated with considerable physical effort.

Abstract
Background. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of physical fitness level in drug addicts participating in an 18-month rehabilitation program organized by “Monar” Association Centre in Dębowiec. Materials and methods. The sample comprised 40 drug addicts participating in the rehabilitation program. Depending on the length of the therapy all patients were divided into 4 groups: 1) 0-3 months; 2) 4-6 months; 3) 7-9 months and 4) 16-18 months. Physical fitness of the patients was evaluated by the Harvard test, Ruffier test, Crampton test and volitional breath holding time. Results. the study outcome revealed a clear progress in the results obtained using the Harvard test and the volitional breath holding time. No significant between group differences were found in the Ruffier’s as well as in Crampton’s index. Conclusions. Physical fitness estimated by means of Harvard test and especially exercise tolerance of this test in drug-addicts who start treatment are low; however, they improve up to control level during the 18 month rehabilitation program. Exercise tests applied in the process of rehabilitation of drug addicts, based only on HR measurements in post-exercise recovery period may not properly reflect the real level of physical fitness.

10-12岁间游泳和不游泳儿童的身体耐力比较

Aleksandra Kruk, Joanna Spurek, Marek Kiljański

Aleksandra Kruk, Joanna Spurek, Marek Kiljański – Comparison of Physical Capacity in Swimming and Non-swimming Children Aged 10-12. Fizjoterapia Polska 2018; 18(3); 36-44

M. Woszczak, K. Bogacz, M. Szczepanik, S. Jandziś,K. Kossakowska, M. Józefowicz-Korczyńska – Assessment of physical endurance in students of the 1st and 2nd grade of secondary school. Fizjoterapia Polska 2018; 18(2); 70-82

Abstract

Introduction. Physical endurance is a very important element of everyone’s health. It is a health aspect comprising the factors which may affect the level of physical endurance. That is why it is important to know what allows to keep it as high as possible.
Objective. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the differences in the levels of physical endurance of students of 1st and 2nd grade of secondary school.
Materials and methods. The studies were conducted on secondary school students. It covered 70 students, including 37 women and 33 men. The physical endurance level was examined using the Harvard Step-Up Test. The study included analysis of the effects of sex, age, place of residence and BMI on the level of physical endurance.
Results and conclusions. The research results allowed to draw the conclusions that sex, place of residence or BMI are not statistically significant for the level of physical endurance of the persons studied. As for age, the research results may indicate that at 5% significance level, age is statistically relevant for the level of physical endurance – older students demonstrate more good and very good fitness results, while the number of average and poor physical endurance results decreases.
