Abstract
The Aging process induces neurological, anatomical, and biochemical alterations in bladder function. Overactive bladder (OAB) incidence increases with age, reducing the quality of life and impairing sleep patterns. A validated method for alleviating OAB symptoms is transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS). TTNS provides additional treatment alternatives for older women experiencing OAB and is appropriate for clinical use owing to its cost-effectiveness, non-invasiveness, and minimal side effects. Although TTNS can potentially alleviate OAB symptoms, its attributes still need to be delineated, and literature evaluations assessing its efficacy are rare. This study aimed to conduct a systematic literature review of randomized controlled trials investigating the impact of TTNS on OAB symptoms in older women. Electronic databases, such as PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus, were queried. The two RCTs included in our systematic review showed that TTNS treatment has an effect on older women with OAB symptoms.
