Abstract

Introduction. Social attitude is a relatively permanent system of beliefs, emotions, feelings and behaviors in relation to a given object/person, which is the result of interactions that an individual is subjected to throughout their life. The aim of the study was to assess attitudes of upper secondary school students towards people with disabilities.
Materiał i metody. 287 students (122 women and 165 men) were included in the diagnostic survey using the author’s survey and the Scale of Attitudes Towards Disabled People in upper secondary schools. The data were analyzed based on Chi-square test, Mann Whitney U test, ANOVA Kruskal-Wallis test, post hoc test for multiple comparisons.
Results. Statistically significant relationships were found between gender and irony and mockery behaviors for people with disabilities (p < 0.001) and participation in actions for the disabled (p < 0.001). Gender differentiated the attitude towards charity actions for the benefit of people with disabilities (p < 0.001), and the type of school diversified attitudes of high school youth towards the disabled (p = 0.003).
Wnioski. Men more often directed irony and mockery at people with disabilities. Women had a better attitude to charity campaigns for the disabled and participate in them more often. High school students had definitely more positive attitudes than representatives of vocational schools and technical secondary schools.

E. Puszczałowska-Lizis, A. Rokosz, I. Zbrońska, S. Lizis –The situation of mothers raising children with intellectual disabilities in relation to selected sociodemographic and clinical factors. Fizjoterapia Polska 2020; 20(2); 110-124

Abstract
Background. The diagnosis of a child’s intellectual disability may trigger different emotions in parents, as a result of which the family may be strengthened, unified or weakened and destabilized. The aim of the study was to assess the situation of mothers raising children with disabilities depending on their age, living environment, education level and the degree of intellectual disability of the child.
Material and methods. The Chi-square test analyzed the results of 103 questionnaires from a diagnostic survey carried out in rehabilitation and educational facilities among mothers of children with intellectual disabilities.
Results. Statistically significant correlations between the age of mothers and the forms of education chosen for children (p = 0.021) and the type of extra classes (p = 0.015) were found. The level of education of mothers showed relationships with the type of sources of information about the specificity of child disorders (p = 0.043), and the degree of disability of the child with the frequency of receiving support from loved ones (p = 0.038), using institutional material help (p = 0.002), the type of factors that are most difficult to accept (p = 0.021), and feelings about the future of children (p = 0.002).
Conclusions. The mothers’ age determines the forms of education and the type of extra-curricular activities. The living environment does not determine the situation of families raising a child with intellectual disability. The mothers’ level of education determines the frequency of using sources of information about the specificity of a child’s disorder. The degree of intellectual disability of a child determines the frequency with which mothers can count on the support of the loved ones, the frequency of using material assistance provided by institutions, as well as the most difficult to accept factors and feelings about the future.

Abstract
The authors, based on source materials and a few studies, present the activities of Edward Madeyski for the development of physiotherapy, physical education and hygiene in Lviv in the years 1870-1906. This doctor, by profession, and a passionate promoter of gymnastics, physiotherapy, hygiene, dietetics and healthy lifestyle, founded the theoretical basics of physical education. He represented the health-and-hygiene school, was a supporter of “rational gymnastics”, published the first Polish manuals for teaching gymnastics in schools. The main aim of the article is to present E. Madeyski’s little-known activity in the field of physiotherapy which he had been practicing since 1870 in his own Orthopedic Gymnastics Center in Lviv. Therein he treated children with musculoskeletal disorders, mainly with spinal curvatures, with the help of physical factors (therapeutic gymnastics, massage, orthopedic supports). Authors also present E. Madeyski’s activities as a teacher and promoter of physical education and hygiene in Galicia at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. His work gave rise to the development of the theory of physical education, gymnastics specialists training and the activity of orthopedic and gymnastic facilities. In recognition of his merits for many years of medical, pedagogical and scientific activity in 1889, the emperor awarded the title of professor to him.

E. Puszczałowska-Lizis, P. Murdzyk, S. Jandziś, M. Kiljański – The effects of health resort treatment on hand function in female rheumatoid arthritis patients; Fizjoterapia Polska 2018; 18(1); 74-82

Abstract

Introduction. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic, chronic, immune-mediated disease of connective tissue. The disease mostly affects the hand joints, leading to weaker hand grip and functional limitations, which in many cases hinders everyday functioning and makes the patients dependent on the assistance of others. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of health resort treatment on improving hand function in female RA patients in comparison with a group of female patients receiving ambulatory treatment.
Materials and methods. The study included a group of 120 women between 35 and 45 years of age suffering from RA, 60 of which were rehabilitated in the “Ziemowit” Health Resort in Rymanów-Zdrój. The other 60 female patients received ambulatory care in the Occupational Health Center in Sanok. Both pinch grip and key grip tests were performed as well as the Grind test. The analyses were conducted with the aid of the Wilcoxon test and the Pearson non-parametric chi-square test of independence.
Results. After the treatment was completed, the number of women who were capable of correctly performing the pinch and key grips and did not feel pain in the carpometacarpal joint of thumb in the Grind test increased in both groups. A statistically significant increase in the scores (in accordance with the adopted binary system) of the respective tests, which indicates an improvement in the outcome measures, was also observed.
Conclusions. The comprehensive health resort treatment and ambulatory care have similar effects on the improvement of hand function parameters in female RA patients.

S. Jandziś, E. Puszczałowska-Lizis, M. Kiljański – Healing gymnastics in activity of gymnastic units on Polish land before 1914. FP 2014; 14(1); 74-84

Abstract

The beginning of organised forms of the healing gymnastics in Poland is connected with the formation of gymnastic units. The first institutions of that kind were formed in Warsaw – Matthesa Teodor Gymnastic Plant (1831), Cracow – Ludwik Bierkowski Gymnastic School (1837), Poznań – Teofil Matecki Gymnastic Plant (1840) and in Lvov – Organopatical Plant of Teodor Bakody (1856). On the base of listed units in Warsaw, Cracow, Poznań and Lvov were formed four first centres of the development of the healing gymnastics on Polish land. Activity of gymnastic units had a significant influence into the more late development of physiotherapy and the medical rehabilitation in Poland. At first healing gymnastics based on German patterns was applied in the plants, and in consecutive years was implemented a Swedish system of the gymnastics of P. H. Ling and method of the mechanotherapy of G. Zandera. The owners of 19th-century gymnastic plants In Poland were doctors and the first specialists in the field of the treatment with the move from outside of the medical world – precursors of contemporary physiotherapists. In this period were also formed the first schools educating physiotherapists in our country.

E. Puszczałowska-Lizis, M. Niebieszczańska, S. Jandziś, M. Kiljański – The Analysis of Potential Risks Factors for Professional Burnout Syndrome in Physiotherapists. FP 2015; 15(2); 68-80

Abstract

Aim. Burnout, defined as mental and emotional exhaustion, is characterized by the loss of energy, commitment to work and the lack of plans for  the future. The aim of the study was to analyze the potential determinants of professional burnout in the physiotherapists.
Material and methods. The study included 102 physiotherapists employed at the health-care centers in Podkarpacie Region. The research tool was a Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) adapted in Polish by Pasikowski. Basic measures of descriptive statistics were calculated. Kruskal-Wallis’s ANOVA analysis of variance was applied to evaluate differences in average numerical properties in more than two populations. In case of statistically significant differences were found in several groups, post-hoc test of multiple comparisons was performed. The differences in average numerical properties in two populations test were evaluated by means of Mann-Whitney U test.
Results. A significantly higher overall rate of burnout in the physiotherapists at the age of 35-40 years old was found  (p=0.0078), who were professionally active for over 10 years (p=0.0026), and did not take non-professional physical activity (p=0.0004). The determination of the value of the indicator of job satisfaction was significantly lower in physiotherapists not participating in postgraduate education (p=0.0388).
Conclusions. There is a need to take action aimed at emotional support of the workers and help to solve problems. Physio-therapists should be encouraged to improve systematically their skills and to promote the principle of caring for their physical fitness through physical activity  and activities not connected with their profession.

E. Puszczałowska-Lizis, P. Bujas, J. Omorczyk, L. Nosiadek. Sexual dimorphism in foot morphology in women and men over 60. FP 2016; 16(3); 88-94

Abstract
Background. The human foot is a supportive and locomotive element, which forms during a whole life in individual manner for every person. In advanced age, the foot is particularly exposed to involutionary changes. The aim of this study was to determine the dimorphic differences in the selected morphological features of the feet in women and men aged over 60.
Material and methods. The research conducted by podoscopic method involved seniors from the Podkarpackie and the Małopolskie voivodeships, including 116 females and 82 males. Tested persons were divided into three age groups (60-69 years, 70-79 years, 80-90 years). The following indices were analyzed: the Clarke’s angle, heel angle (γ), hallux valgus angle (α), and the V toe varus deformity angle (β). Basic descriptive statistics were calculated. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to assess significance of the differences in morphological features of the feet between the women and men.
Results. In both sexes the analysed indices worsened in comparison to the normative values. Statistically significant differences between woman and man concern the Clarke’s angle and the hallux valgus angle (α).
Conclusions. The most important plantographic features which differentiate the feet structure of women and men aged over 60 are Clark’s angle and the hallux valgus angle (α). The popularisation of preventative kinesiotherapy for the elderly should constitute an indispensable element of action aimed at slowing down involution processes to maintain the optimal – according to age – static and dynamic conditions of the locomotion system.
