Abstract

Solar baths were used as a healing method as early as in ancient times, but modern fototherapy is connected with Arnold Rikkli (19th/20th century) – one of the pioneers who demonstrated positive influence of sunlight on human organism. Natural sunlight, and subsequently light emitted by different kinds of radiators were used mainly for treatment purposes. For many years the producers, following the fashion for having suntanned skin, have been offering a very broad range of special machines for sunbathing called sunbeds. Those machines have been mostly used in cosmetics, unfortunately very often by unskilled personnel. Sunbeds attract many people, who hardly ever know something about the harmfulness of excessive sunbathing. The article presents the construction of sunbeds, the rules of safe sunbathing and the role of UV radiation. Sunbathing for dermatological purposes (skin treatment) has not been covered in the article. A suggestion was put forward that there is a great need to broadly inform society about hazards connected with improper natural tanning as well as with solarium use.
