Abstract
Background. Compromised muscle performance is common problem in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and subsequently affects activities of daily living and quality of life (QoL). Objective. to investigate the additional effect of short-term aerobic training on both of muscle performance and QoL in patients with MS. Design. Single blinded, parallel randomized controlled trial. Setting. Faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University, Egypt. Participants: 40 patients with relapsing remitting MS (RRMS) were randomly divided into two equal groups; intervention (n = 20) and control (n = 20) groups. Intervention. Both groups received a therapeutic exercise program of active strengthening and stretching exercises for selected lower limbs muscles. Only intervention group received aerobic training using bicycle ergometer three sessions weekly for eight successive weeks. Outcomes measures: isokinetic dynamometer parameters; total work, power and fatigue index, to evaluate muscle performance. The Short Form health survey (SF-36) was also applied to evaluate the QoL. Results. Intervention group showed a remarkable significant improvement in all of the isokinetic parameters and in several subscales of SF-36 questionnaire as well when compared with the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion. adding aerobic training to physical therapy program can be more beneficial in improving muscle performance and quality of life in patients with MS.

Dominika Drelich, Katarzyna Michalak, Elżbieta Poziomska-Piątkowska – Assessment of the relationship between the level of physical fitness and the quality of life among women over 60 years old attending physical activity classes in comparison with their non – training peers. Fizjoterapia Polska 2020; 20(5); 150-159

Abstract
Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of regular physical activity on the level of general fitness and quality of life in women over 60 years of age.
Materials and methods. The study included 36 healthy women (18 training and 18 non-training) over 60 years old, among whom the Senior Fitness Test and the WHOQOL–BREF questionnaire were carried out
Results. The analysis of the U Mann-Whitney test showed statistically significant differences for most of the variables between the study groups (p < 0.05) in the Senior Fitness Test (except for the Arm Bending Test, p = 0.137) in favor of training women. Based on the results of the shortened version of the WHOQOL–BREF questionnaire, it was observed that seniors who attend physical exercises consider their standard of living as significantly better than their non-training peers.
Conclusions.
1) Women over 60 years old who regularly attend physical activities, show significantly higher level of physical fitness compared to inactive peers.
2) Active seniors consider their standard of living to be significantly better than that of non-training women.
3) A high level of physical fitness positively correlates with the overall life quality.

K. Czupryna, O. Nowotny-Czupryna, J. Szymańska, R. Szczepaniak – Quality of life of the family of a child with psychomotor disability in the context of solving everyday problems. Fizjoterapia Polska 2019; 19(3); 54-61

Abstract
There is a strong relation between the type and severity of the disease/disability, the effects of treatment and/or improvement on one hand, and the quality of life on the other. In the case of a disabled child, this relation also includes members of the family. The criterion of a reduced quality of family life is the limitation of its participation in social life assessed in the area of 6 aspects, i.e.: communication, interpersonal relations with the child, mobility, self-care, domes-tic life and social life. The aim of the work is to present everyday problems in the area of the above mentioned aspects of a family with a disabled child in connection with the necessity to acquire new competences by its members.

Abstract
Aim. The aim of the study was to assess factors affecting functional status of patients after total unilateral hip arthroplasty.
Material and methods. A total of 50 patients (33 women, 17 men), aged 29-88 years (mean 66,7 ± 13 years) with unilateral hip joint prosthesis were included in the study. The assessment of the balance and gait function was made on the basis of the following tests: Tinetti, Timed Up and Go (TUG) and the two scales test, on the basis of which the Symmetry Index (SI) was calculated. The degree of pain sensation while walking on a flat surface and on stairs and the level of stiffness were estimated using the Likert scale. To assess the ability to perform simple and complex daily activities, the Katz ADL (Activities of Daily Living) and the Lawton IADL (Instrumental Activities of Daily Living) scales were used. Self-assessment of the quality of life was also made on the basis of a numerical rating scale. Moreover, the body mass index (BMI) was calculated.
Results. Age of patients, pain and stiffness determined the majority of test results and functional scales. Patients suffering from more diseases achieved worse results in the Tinetti test. Only the severity of pain while climbing the stairs affected the SI result. Patients reporting more severe pain and morning stiffness were characterized by poorer self-assessment of their quality of life.
Conclusions. Age, pain and morning stiffness affect the functional status and the quality of life of patients with unilateral hip prosthesis. BMI and the time that elapsed since surgery did not affect the patients’ condition.

J. Szymańska, O. Nowotny-Czupryna, K. Czupryna, R. Szczepaniak – Improvement in the quality of life of persons with chronic lower extremity ischaemia after high-tone power therapy. FP 2017; 17(3); 64-73

Materiał i metodyka. Badaniami objęto 68 chorych w wieku 40-70 lat, których
przydzielono do grupy A – zasadniczej i B – kontrolnej.
Wnioski. Terapia energotonowa powoduje subiektywną poprawę możliwości funkcjonalnych w zakresie lokomocji we wszystkich domenach samooceny chorych. Poprawa funkcji kończyn dolnych uwarunkowana jest obecnością dodatkowych czynników, stanowiących swego rodzaju czynniki ryzyka choroby.

Z. Śliwiński, M. Śliwa, M. Starczyńska, W. Kiebzak – Quality of life in patients with lumbar spinal pain. FP 2014; 14(2); 26-39

Abstract

In recent years, increasing attention has been drawn to the need of a holistic approach to patients. Studies involving the measurement of the quality of life and taking into consideration not only the physical, but also emotional and spiritual aspects of well-being, have been conducted with increasing intensity over the last few decades. In case of disorders as common as spinal pain syndromes, the measurement of the intensity of pain is particularly important, as these diseases are a scourge for the developing societies. The goal of this study was to present and popularize data on the quality of life. The study included 38 subjects (23 females and 15 males) complaining of lumbar spinal pains. The study group was diverse in many aspects, including age distribution. The studies revealed different levels of quality of live impairment depending on the degree of impairment as the result of the disease. Conclusions based on the survey demonstrate the need to include the quality of life in the rehabilitation process. Measurements of the quality of life provide much information on the patient, their attitude to the disease as well as the rehabilitation process.
