Abstract
There are a number of possible abnormalities in the locomotor apparatus which, if not diagnosed sufficiently and properly treated, may produce significant dysfunctions in locomotion, and even serious systemic consequences. This problem becomes particular vital when the given abnormality occurs in a significant percentage of the population, develops insidiously, and in addition tends to promote other abnormalities, when it affects young persons in the growth years. This has provided the impetus to undertake screening tests as a precondition of sorts for early physiotherapeutic intervention. The group of disorders in question includes deviations from proper posture. As a result, a number of methods to evaluate posture have been developed over the years, but only a few of them are suitable for large-scale screening tests. The authors have thus developed a posture evaluation system that is suitable for this type of testing, built on the foundation of routine orthopedic testing. In order to achieve complete quantification of the results, we modified the point scale to express numerically the degree of severity of the deviations found. Individual test results are read out into a computer and sent to the appropriate data base. A specially developed computer program makes it possible, then, to generate an individual test protocol. An even more essential feature is that it is possible to create various kinds of statistical reports, constructed to fit the present realities of the health care system for children and youth. Among other things, these reports may be useful not only to create appropriate dispensary groups and organize suitable health care in schools, but also to provide primary and specialized medical care.

Abstract
Background. Screening examinations undertaken in periods of intensive body growth (growth spurts) and including an assessment of body posture are a basic form of prevention. These examinations help to pick out children at risk of developing faulty postures or with established postural defects so that they can benefit from corrective measures, if necessary. The aim of the work was to examine body postures of adolescents during their second growth spurt and to compare the results with postural data obtained at the age of seven.Material and methods. The study initially involved 116 subjects, of whom 63 were qualified for further assessment. Their posture was examined twice, at the ages of 7 and 13, using a modified scoring system. The results were compared.Results. The results confirmed the presence of postural variability. The posture of a third of the participants did not change. Of the others, improved postures were seen in half of them and postural deterioration in the other half. The second examination did not reveal any severe posture faults, but there were fewer children with normal postures. In the period between the examinations most of the children with faulty postures had attended corrective gymnastics classes once a week at their schools.Conclusions. 1. The results confirmed variability of body posture, leading both to spontaneous improvement and postural deterioration. 2. There are some possibilities for spontaneous improvement but only in children with minor posture faults.

Abstract

Goal. Comprehensive evaluation of the body posture in the early school-age children and determining the prevalence of the postural disorders in the population. Estimation of impact of the BMI on the occurrence of the disorders in relation to a child’s gender, and answering the question whether the frequency of the disorders increases with age.
Materials and Methods. The study included 285 school children from the grades 1-3, from a primary school located in Lodz. The study population consisted of 135 girls and 150 boys, aged 6-9 years. As the research method, the visual examination has been used.  The body posture has been assessed in sagittal and frontal planes. And the dynamic gait assessment has been performed. With the observation-based postural assessment method, the spine curvature and the ribcage curvature have been evaluated. An important part of the research has been the observation of the back in the bent forward position, using the Bertrand’s test.
Results. Within the study population of children from the grades 1-3, we have found large percentage of children with the posture disorders, 30.53% in girls and 37.54% in boys. It has been shown, that the most common posture disorder in the early school-age children is the asymmetrical alignment of the shoulder blades. This has been true for, respectively, 37.77% of the girls and 31.33% of the boys. Most at risk for the abnormalities being developed, has been the group of the 7-years-olds. No statistically significant dependency has been found between the impact of the BMI on the posture disorders, in relation to a child’s gender. It has been established that, in the study population, the BMI has had an impact on the valgus knees deformity.
Conclusions. The research has shown true importance of the children posture disorders issue. The prevalence rate of these disorders should prompt to organize screening programs in schools. This will definitely help to quickly establish any deviations from the normal status and will motivate parents and guardians to seek an orthopedic advice or join a rehabilitation program.
