Effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and Rocabado exercises on temporomandibular joint dysfunction after head and neck surgeries

Abstract Purpose. To investigate the impact of TENS and Rocabado exercises on TMJ dysfunction after head and neck surgeries. Methods. This study comprised 72 patients (45 males and 27 females) aged 40–60 years who were diagnosed with TMD post-HNCS. The participants were equally divided into three groups: Group A received TENS and Rocabado exercises, Group B followed Rocabado exercises, and Group C received TENS. The three groups received a conventional physiotherapy program. Pre- and post-eight-week intervention, visual analog scale (VAS), maximum mouth opening (MMO), and mandibular function impairment questionnaire (MFIQ) were used for assessment. Results. Both MMO and MFIQ had a non-significant difference between Groups A and B, yet they exhibited a significant disparity in Groups A and B in contrast to Group C (p = 0.001). Additionally, VAS significantly differed in Group A more than in Groups B and C, with no significant difference between Groups B and C (p = 0.001). Conclusion. The combined effect of TENS and Rocabado exercises was comparatively better than TENS or Rocabado exercises alone in managing TMD after HNCS.

Vacuum Assisted Closure Therapy Versus Polarized Light in The Treatment of Pressure Ulcer: A randomized controlled trial

Abstract

Purpose. This study was conducted to determine the effect of vacuum assisted closure therapy (VAC) versus polarized light or bioptron light therapy (BLT) in the treatment of pressure ulcers (PUs). Materials and Methods. Sixty patients of both sexes suffering from pressure ulcers classified between grade II and III according to the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP), undergoing traditional medical treatment, participated in this study and were randomly assigned into two groups; group A, received polarized light 3 sessions per week for 8 weeks, and group B, received vacuum assisted closure therapy daily for 8 weeks. In addition to wound culture recording, wound surface area (WSA) and wound depth assessment were conducted before starting the treatment and at the end of treatment after 8 weeks of intervention. Results. Statistical analysis showed reduction in ulcer surface area and depth after treatment for both groups with high significant improvement in ulcer surface area and depth using polarized light. Conclusion. It can be concluded that both polarized light and vacuum assisted closure therapy had significant effect on pressure ulcers healing with high significant improvement in ulcer surface area and depth using polarized light compared with vacuum assisted closure therapy.
