Abstract

The purpose of this article is to discuss the role of patient assessment in medical massage. The effect of massage therapy on the human organism has been known and appreciated for centuries, even millennia. Many massage therapist, however, tend to rely on intuition and routine. In order to improve the efficiency of massage therapy we have made an attempt to provide sound theoretical and methodological foundations based on anatomy, physiology, histology, and other fields of medical science. From our experience we know that the duration of therapy is effectively reduced by half in comparison with traditional methods, usually limited to treatment of the painful area without diagnosis of any possible distortions of tissues that are structurally and functionally connected with such areas.

Abstract

Background. Low back pain is a very often reported disorder in physiotherapist’s office. Medical massage is one of the most popular method to treat this kind of problem. The main difference between medical and classical massage depends on its methodology. In medical massage it is crucial to include the structural relationship between soft tissues. In order to find an effective treatment method therapist must treat patients as a whole, as a number of connected with each other structures. To assess the effectiveness of medical massage in people with low back pain problems. Material and methods. Twenty eight patients with low back pain have taken part in the research. Anamnesis was taken from all the patients, they also had a palpation examination to evaluate the intensity of pain in tissues. The evaluation was taken before the treatment, after the sixth and the last procedure of medical massage. Patients had one set consisting of 10 procedures. Time duration of each procedure was between 40-70 minutes. It was supposed that the painful area means disorder with an increased tension in this place. Structures which had bigger tenderness were massaged. Subjects were in prone or lying on their side position in order to maintain relaxed conditions. Classical techniques were used: stroking, petrissage, kneading, and vibration by the same therapist in all subjects. Results. There has been a significant decrease in both number of painful areas and pain intensity reported by patients. Conclusion. Medical massage is an effective therapeutic method to work on patients with low back pain. The effectiveness of massage was observed after six procedures, and after the sixth massage patients reported only slight pain.

Waldemar Andrzejewski, Krzysztof Kassolik, Paweł Adam – The evaluation of the efficacy of medical massage in degenerative changes of the lumbar spine. Fizjoterapia Polska 2006; 6(3); 198-205

Abstract
Background. Low back pain caused by degenerative changes is a common reason for long-term pharmacological treatment utilizing analgesic medications, anti-inflammatory medications and medication decreasing muscle tension. Also therapeutic methods from the realm of physiotherapy are used in the treatment: kinesitherapy, physiotherapy and massage. In the case of medical massage based on the principle of tensegrity, therapists have individual approach to the patient. They assess tonus of soft tissue of the motor apparatus, localize pain and the ways it spreads. Such approach increases the likelihood that the therapy will succeed and can improve its efficacy. The study is an attempt to evaluate the efficacy of medical massage performed in people with degenerative changes of the low back. Material and methods. The participants of the study were 30 people in the age range 42-65 (mean age 53.5): 19 women and 11 men, who reported to the physicians with low back pain. Medical examination and X-Ray images indicated degenerative changes in the lumbar spine. The procedures were performed 3 times a week for 2 weeks. Each procedure lasted 45-60 min. Health evaluation record was used to evaluate the efficacy of the therapy. Medical history of a patient was taken on the basis of the record and physical examination of pressure sensitivity of soft tissue of the motor apparatus was performed. Another tool of the research method was a survey checking the patient’s subjective assessment of the state of health as well as frequency and intensity of the lumbar spine pain and lower limbs pain. Results. Pressure sensitivity of the examined structures decreased or regressed in all patients as a result of the therapy. After a series of procedures, pain, overall feeling of well-being and current state of health improved to various degrees. In all cases, the incidence and intensity of pain in the lower limbs decreased after the therapy. Conclusions. Medical massage can be an effective method of physiotherapeutic treatment in cases of pain connected with degenerative changes of the lumbar spine.

Comparison of the impacts of classic massage and Lomi Lomi Nui massage on the mental and physical condition of the patient

A. Gajos, M. Kiljański – Comparison of the impacts of classic massage and Lomi Lomi Nui massage on the mental and physical condition of the patient. Fizjoterapia Polska 2018; 18(4); 38-49

Abstract
The objective of this study is comparison of the impacts of classic massage and Lomi Lomi Nui massage in treating stress-induced mental and physical tiredness. Another objective is to compare the impact of massage on body hydration and on the level of extracellular water.
Materials and methods. The study covered 30 persons aged 25 – 65.
The patients were divided into 2 groups. Group I included 15 people (7 women and 8 men) who underwent a classic massage. Group II included 15 people (7 women and 8 men) who underwent a Lomi Lomi massage.
Before the massage, the body mass and height were measured in both groups, and then the patients underwent bioelectrical impedance analysis for the purpose of measuring body hydration and the level of extracellular water.
After the massage, impedance was measured again for the purpose of determining the difference in results after the massage. The patients were then asked to fill in a questionnaire including a question about the effectiveness of massages in decreasing mental and physical tiredness and about the impressions during and right after the massage.
Results. Both massages are effective in alleviating the symptoms of stress-induced mental and physical tiredness. The results were not statistically relevant.
The classic massage resulted in reduction in pain and muscle stiff muscles, while the Lomi Lomi massage affected the emotional aspects – the patients were relaxed, the harmony between spirit
and body was recovered, which was statistically relevant. The results of bioelectrical impedance analysis indicate that the massages affected body hydration
and the level of extracellular water. The comparison of arithmetic means of results indicated that the classic massage demonstrated a greater relationship than the Lomi Lomi massage, which was statistically relevant.
