Beata Żuk – Perception of posture by children aged 12-13 and their parents in light of ideas of „The School of Healthy Spine”. Fizjoterapia Polska 2008; 8(4); 454-463

Abstract
Background. Preventive measures implemented in accordance with the ideas of the School Of Healthy Spine seem to be a good and effective method of improving the health of both children and their parents. The main goal of this article was to demonstrate that there is an urgent need to put into practice the assumptions advocated by the School of Healthy Spine from Karlsruhe by including them in the primary school curriculum and in training programs for teachers and educational advisers. The article addresses two crucial issues, namely to what extent schoolchildren’s knowledge and awareness of the ways of maintaining a correct posture influences their perception of their own physique. The second objective was to determine whether parents’ knowledge of the principles of good posture influences the perception of their children’s posture problems and prompts action to improve their children’s posture.Material and methods. The study was carried out in Warsaw’s Mokotów District in 2007. The participants were pupils of the 6th (final) grade of primary school and their parents. The diagnostic medical examination was employed as the main research tool. The results were verified with the help of questionnaires designed by the author.Results. The findings of the study clearly indicate that the awareness of healthy posture of the 64 pupils and their parents definitely influenced their way of perceiving their own posture. Conclusions. 1. The findings regarding the level of knowledge of the principles of healthy posture in the group of children aged 12-13 confirm the need to modify school curricula. This, in turn, requires that both teachers and instructors possess essential knowledge about child development as well as the principles of mechanics and pathomechanics of postural defects. 2. There is an urgent need to educate children and their parents to develop the postural perception skills.

Tomasz Wolny, Edward Saulicz, Rafał Gnat, Mirosław Kokosz, Michał Kuszewski, Andrzej Myśliwiec – Subjective assessment of the effects of different approaches to rehabilitation of patients after cerebral stroke. Fizjoterapia Polska 2009; 9(3); 223-231

Abstract
Background. Paying attention to the individual needs of the patient during treatment planning is becoming an important element of contemporary rehabilitation of post-stroke patients. The patient should not only be the recipient, but also a co-author of the programme of rehabilitation administered to him or her. The study hypothesis was that the type of rehabilitation treatment would influence the patient’s subjective evaluation of the effects of rehabilitation. Material and methods. The study involved a group of 64 stroke patients. All subjects were divided randomly into three groups (A, B and C). Subjective assessment of the efficacy of rehabilitation was based on a specially prepared questionnaire. Patients were followed up for about 21 days, during which period they were administered comprehensive rehabilitation. Group A received traditional post-stroke therapy. The rehabilitation programme for Group B included individual kinesiotherapy based on the PNF method. The programme for Group C comprised individual kinesiotherapy based on the PNF method supplemented with tensing neuromobilisations of peripheral nerves of the paretic upper extremity. Results. Overall, the highest average number of points (x = 11.5394), corresponding to the most marked subjective impro -vement, was recorded in Group C, while the least marked effect was noted in Group A (x = 8.1751). Conclusions. The subjective assessment of the effects of rehabilitation treatment correlated significantly with the type of rehabilitation administered.

Julia Szczechowicz, Jacek Lewandowski – The level of self-esteem in people with skin scald damage. Fizjoterapia Polska 2011; 11(3); 253-260

Abstract
The goal of this study was to determine the impact of burns on the level and structure of self-esteem. The purpose of the conducted studies was to demonstrate if people with burn scars differ from healthy people in the level of self-esteem and whether if there is a correlation between the area of burn, its visibility, the patient’s age at the time of an accident and the level of self-esteem in individuals with burns or scalds. The sample comprised 30 patients with burns or scalds and 30 control group subjects. In the group of patients with scalds, additional variables such as the age at the time of injury, extent of burn and its location were taken into account. The respondents filled in a questionnaire whose aim was to measure their level of self-esteem taking into account its components: self-esteem of physical appearance, self-esteem of social and mental qualities. The survey consisted of 54 items assessed using a 5-level scale. The obtained results were statistically analyzed using the Student-t testStatistically significant differences between the studied groups were found in the general level of self-esteem (t =- 2.1, p = 0.03) and self-esteem of physical appearance (t = -2.29, p = 0.02). Within the group of patients with burns, those at younger age (less than 4) were characterized by a significantly higher level of self-esteem (t =- 2.22, p = 0.03) than those who were older and sustained burns.Burn patients are characterized by a lower level of self-esteem in comparison with those who did not sustain this type of injury. The age at the time of sustaining burns can be one of the factors affecting the level of self-esteem of burn patients.
