W. Kuliński, B. Dulnik – Kinezyteraphy in the cerebral palsy – clinical aspects. Fizjoterapia Polska 2019; 19(3); 106-116

Abstract
Background. Cerebral palsy (CP) is a motor and postural disorder resulting from permanent brain damage that occurred at an early stage of development. It is the most common cause of disability in children, who grow up to become adults, but their functional performance decreases over time.
Aim. To present the importance of kinesiotherapy in CP patients.
Material and methods. The study included 20 patients (12 women and 8 men aged 20 to 60 years) with CP who participated in motor rehabilitation sessions conducted at the Occupational Therapy Workshop in Sędek and the Comprehensive Rehabilitation and Health Promotion Centre in Raków. Their clinical presentation was dominated by manifestations of motor and postural abnormalities caused by upper motor neuron and corticospinal tract damage. A diagnostic survey was used as the research method. The study used a survey questionnaire that collected information about problems associated with everyday life and functioning of the study patients and assessed their rehabilitation programme.
Results. The results emphasise the role of kinesiotherapy in the rehabilitation of patients with CP. Systematic motor rehabilitation contributed to an improvement in their physical fitness and everyday functioning.
Conclusions. Physiotherapy allows patients to achieve their maximum functional level and prevents the development of complications associated with CP.

A D Gopalswami, S.Senthil Kumar, S. Venkatesan – Effect of Manual therapy over conventional treatment among chronic degenerative joint disease of the knee – A Prospective Comparative study. Fizjoterapia Polska 2019; 19(3); 82-90

Abstract
Background. Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD) of knee is a musculoskeletal disorder that affects about 22% to 39% of population in India. The physical impairments among DJD patients poses a significant challenge to clinicians in order to manage and restore their functional capabilities. The disease has been well managed with conventional physiotherapy and exercises. The potential benefits of such physiotherapy lasted for short term.
Aim. Thus, the primary aim was to find the efficacy of less explored methods of treating muscular deficits such as Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) and structured exercise program. The primary objectives of the study were to analyze the effectiveness of MET and joint mobilization in relieving pain severity, improving knee joint ROM and muscle strength.
Material and methods. One hundred patients diagnosed to have tibiofemoral joint degeneration with a grade 2 or 3 on Kellgren and Lawrence scale, were allocated in to Experimental Group (EG) and Comparative Group (CG). EG had received manual therapy in the form of joint mobilization, MET, strengthening exercises and patient education whereas CG had received the referred treatment program (Interferential therapy) along with strengthening exercises and patient education for a period of two weeks.
Results. The analyses of outcome variables for Pain (VAS), knee joint Range of Motion (ROM), Muscle Power and Isometric muscle strength of Quadriceps and Hamstrings was done. Choice of statistical tests (Wilcoxon signed rank test and Mann Whitney U test) was used based on the type of variables.
Conclusions. In a disease specific program, inclusion of manual therapy as a part of treatment regimen would be an effective management for knee osteoarthritis patients. Such an intervention may possibly delay or reduce the need for joint replacement.

S. Tyszkiewicz, M. Tyndorf, K. Dowgierd – Implementation of manual physiotherapeutic activities as an important element of supporting surgical treatment in congenital malformations of the bite and temporomandibular joints – case report. Fizjoterapia Polska 2019; 19(3); 38-45

Abstract
Introduction. Surgical procedures used to treat congenital craniofacial malformations may give rise to complications, resulting in impaired function of the stomatognathic system. Reconstructive correction of subsequent defects may require multi-disciplinary skills, including those of maxillofacial and microsurgery, orthodontics, speech therapy and physiotherapy. The purpose of reconstruction to restore function can be divided into two stages: firstly the establishment of correct anatomical relationships in the facial skeleton and secondly the restoration of function of individual structures of the stomatognathic system, together with the stabilisation of both function and appearance. The latter is fundamentally associated with supportive physiotherapy.
Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to determine the effectiveness of physiotherapy in the process of restoring motor functions in the stomatognathic system in a patient treated for disorders of the masticatory apparatus.
Material and methods. The article presents an account of supportive physiotherapy utilised in the healing process. The case study presented is that of a patient with congenital ankylosis of the temporomandibular joints. The patient presented in the maxillofacial department for surgical joint treatment and with associated in activity in the musculature of this region. Initial treatment involved bilateral arthroplasty with prosthetic arthroplasy, after which it was possible to proceed to restoration of functional speech. The provision of physiotherapy over a timescale of six months achieved reduction of oedema, development of the expected range of movement, reduction of pain and the achievement of deglutition.
Results. Results were maintained through continuation of therapeutic procedures, since periods of reduced activity are associated with loss of function. In order to increase functional capacity and achieve stability, the patientis to undergo microtransplantation (cable grafts) and orthodontic treatment to achieve full centricocclusion. Speech therapy and physiotherapy will also be continued.
Conclusions: Supportive physiotherapy should be a key element of treatment of patients after maxillofacial procedures, regardless of whether this is due to injury, congenital malformation ororthognathic procedures.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.56984/8ZG13F46E

Abstract
Background. Burn victims develop hypertrophic scar as a progression to burn wound healing. Physical therapy intervention may help, as adjuvant therapy, in solving this problem.
Objective. The aim was to study the effectiveness of vacuum therapy on the post burn scar in addition to conventional physical therapy.
Design, Setting, and Participants. Randomized, single-blind, superiority, parallel, controlled, clinical trial in patients with hypertrophic scar post-burn in the lower limb, age between 20 and 40 years, selected form Out-Patient Clinic of burn and surgery in the South Valley University Hospitals between October 2017 and May 2018. 48 patients were randomized into either study or control group, using block randomization (study group n=24 and control group n=24). Interventions: conventional physical therapy in form of friction massage and lower limb muscles stretching was conducted for the control group and vacuum treatment in addition to conventional physical therapy was conducted for the study group. Treatment frequency was 3 sessions per week for 4 weeks. Outcomes: assessment of scar thickness using ultrasonography and assessment of scar severity by modified Vancouver Scar Scale (mVSS) were the main outcomes.
Results. 42 patients were analysed (study group n = 22 and control group n = 20) with follow up measure after 4 weeks showed significant improvement in scar sickness with 22% and 34% percentage of improvement and 56% and 62% improvement in mVSS within groups control and study groups respectively, with no significant difference between both groups in before or after treatment measures.
Conclusion. Adding vacuum therapy to conventional physical therapy treatment program is effective but not superior to the conventional physical therapy intervention alone, in the form of friction massage and stretching, in the treatment of lower limb hyper trophic scar
