Jan Szczegielniak, Katarzyna Bogacz, Marcin Krajczy, Jacek Łuniewski – Exercise tolerance tests used in physiotherapy for COPD patients. Fizjoterapia Polska 2019; 19(3); 24-30

Abstract
Aerobic training constitutes the basis of COPD patients’ physiotherapy. To establish individualized exercise load for each patient it is necessary to conduct an exercise tolerance test. Exercise tolerance tests allow for adequate planning of endurance training and assessment of its outcomes. Additionally, they are considered a_reliable tool for the assessment of rehabilitation benefits. Exercise tolerance tests are frequently used for physiotherapy qualification, development of training programs, identification of symptoms which reduce exercise effort potential, monitoring of physiotherapy process and assessment of physiotherapy effects.

El-Sayed Hassan Abo-Steit, Ahmed El-Kharbotly, Mohamed Mostafa Adawy, Ashraf Hassan Mohammed, Enas Mostafa Mohamed – Effect of Low-Level Laser Therapy on Morphological Changes of Median Nerve after Surgical Decompression of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Randomized Controlled Trail. Fizjoterapia Polska 2019; 19(2); 18-22

Streszczenie
Background. The effect of Low Level (LLLT) Laser on median nerve morphology after carpal tunnel release (CTR) had been not investigated yet.
Objectives. To investigate the effect of LLLT on morphological changes of the median nerve after surgical decompression of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Design. A prospective, randomized, pre–post-test, controlled trial. Setting. outpatient clinic of Banha University Hospital – Egypt. The study was conducted between June 2017 and Feb 2018. Participants. Thirty patients with residual pain after 3 months from CTR randomly divided into two equal groups. Interventions. group (A) received a program of gallium-aluminium-arsenide Laser, 850 nm, 100 mW, continuous operation area of 0.07 cm2, fluency of irradiation of 3 J/cm2, exposure of 30 seconds per point, six points of irradiation on the carpal tunnel two sessions per week over six week’s period in addition to medical treatment, while group (B) received medical treatment alone.
Main Outcome Measure. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Sensory Distal Latency (SDL), median nerve Cross Sectional Area (CSA).
Results. There was a statistically significant reduction in VAS score, and improvement of SDL, CSA and ΔCSA in laser group compared with control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion. Low level therapy was yield more improvement for persistent or recurrent symptoms after CTR.

A. Marszałek, E. Marszałek, A. Koniarski, J. Bińczyk, Z. Śliwiński – Procedure after hip joint arthroscopy in the femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). Fizjoterapia Polska 2019; 19(3), 6-17

Abstract

Paper presents perioperative protocol of physioterapeutic management applied in FAI patients treated with arthroscopy. Short overview of the FAI problem: causes, symptoms, diagnostics and methods of treatment is included. Described protocol is author’s own based on the literature review. The protocol presented is divided into four stages. The importance of preoperative conservative management with special emphasis on pelvis tilt control is highlighted. Functional tests qualifying patients to following stages are described.
Summary. The protocol described and used in our practice with FAI patients treated by arthroscopic approach is effective in their recovery and enables full return to sport at a previous level.

Assessment of knowledge of the health status of patients with spinal cord injuries among physiotherapists from public health institutions in Wielkopolska region

Tomasz Tasiemski

T. Tasiemski – Assessment of knowledge of the health status of patients with spinal cord injuries among physiotherapists from public health institutions in Wielkopolska region. FP 2012; 12(4); 305-312

Abstract

Background. Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in functional disorders of multiple systems of the human body and brings about a number of post-traumatic complications. The patients should be informed about the health status after SCI already during their stay in hospital or rehabilitation centre. The main objective of this study was to assess the level of physiothe – rapists knowledge of about the health status of SCI patients.
Material and methods. The study involved 55 physiotherapists (35 women and 20 men) employed in 12 public health institutions in Wielkopolska region. The average number of years worked as a physiotherapist was 9 in the studied sample. The research tools used for this study included the knowledge test checking the participants’ knowledge about the health of SCI patients and a personal questionnaire.
Results. The general level of knowledge about the health of SCI patients among the physiotherapists has been assessed as satisfactory, the highest in the area of nutrition/diet and thrombosis, and the lowest as regards obtaining assistance after SCI. The type of school completed did not affect the subjects’ knowledge of the health status of SCI patients. A significant negative correlation between the level of knowledge and years of physiotherapists working in the profession was revealed.
Conclusions. The graduates of physiotherapy studies or colleges, especially those with long work experience, should be aware of the necessity of lifelong learning and regularly renew their professional knowledge, in this case by tracing the latest information on the health and daily functioning of SCI patients.

USG-feedback – novelty in Polish physiotherapy

T. Wolny, E. Saulicz, A. Myśliwiec, M. Kuszewski, M. Kokosz  – USG-feedback – nowość w polskiej fizjoterapii. FP 2012; 12(4); 293-304

Abstract

Ultrasounds have been used in the physiotherapy for a long time, however up till now their application was connected with the therapeutic process. They are applied in the treatment of pain syndromes, in the course of degenerative diseases of peripheral and spinal articulations, neuralgia, soft tissue overload syndromes and after sport injuries. The ultrasound application for diagnostic purposes, as well as support for exercises (sonofeedback), is a new approach which takes its first steps in the Polish physiotherapy and arouses some controversies of the formal-legal as well as factual nature. The great value of the USG application in physiotherapy is primarily connected with the fact that it makes it possible to dynamically assess various tissues in real time at rest as well as during movement. It is a perfect tool to specify the functional diagnosis and to detect contraindications for a therapy. Its application both in a functional diagnosis as well as in a therapy improves the clinical analysis of the osteo-articulo-muscular system which is emphasized and recommended by many authors.
Applying the USG in physiotherapy is beneficial, both for the physiotherapists and their patients. For the physiotherapists – because it improves the efficiency and effectiveness of the therapy program and increases in the range of provided services and for the patients becouse of a significantly higher level of treatment.
