J. Pokaczajło, T. Tasiemski – Analysis of selected determinants of knowledge about the health in persons with spinal cord injury. FP 2016; 16(3);106-116

Abstract
Aim of the Study. The main aim of this study has been to analyze the selected factors determining level of knowledge of the health condition of persons after the spinal cord injury (SCI). Selected variables have been divided into two groups:  1)  Socio-demographic: age on the day of the test, gender, marital status, level of education, place of residence, and 2)  associated with the SCI: age on the day of the injury, time elapsed from the injury, participation in the Active Rehabilitation (AR) camps, clinical picture, i.e. paraplegia/quadriplegia.
Materials and Methods. In the study participated 100 persons after the SCI (22 women and 78 men), dependent on a wheelchair in the everyday functions. To carry out the study, we have used the test of knowledge of the health condition of persons after the SCI.
Results. The mean score obtained by the respondents in the test of knowledge has been 27.11 points (Derived from the range: 10-45 points), which indicates a sufficient knowledge of the health condition of persons after the SCI. The best knowledge the respondents have shown on the issues related to nutrition and diet. The least knowledgeable they were in the areas of requesting support and orthopedic supplies. The factors significantly differentiating the level of knowledge about the health of persons after the SCI included: participation in the AR camps, age on the day of the injury and the time elapsed from the day of the injury.
Conclusions. The overall evaluation of knowledge as sufficient, and the unsatisfactory results within the particular areas of the functioning of persons after the SCI, have indicated the issues, which during the process of rehabilitation and education of the patients should be given particular attention.

Core Stability in the Rehabilitation of Children – Physiotherapy Aspects

Sylwia Dyczewska-Wójtowicz

S. Dyczewska-Wójtowicz – Core Stability in the Rehabilitation of Children – Physiotherapy Aspects. FP 2016;16(3);96-105

Abstract
Introduction. The term “core stability” refers to the efficiency of the deep torso muscles, which control the center of our body, both in statics and dynamics. This study presents the various physiotherapy related aspects regarding the core stability issue in the scientific materials, which confirm the effectiveness of physical exercises.
Materials and Methods. In the process of search for the topic related materials, we have used the article databases of MedLine, PubMed and PBL, applying the following keywords: core stability, lumbar stability, dynamic stability, motor control, neuromuscular training, trunk stability, core strengthening.
Results. Numerous scientific studies show, that the muscles playing the major role in this mechanism are: anterior scalene, multifidus muscle, internal oblique, pelvic floor muscles and sellar diaphragm. When properly functioning, the muscles form the kind of cylinder, providing sufficient stability for the lower trunk area (which is the basis for perimeter mobility).
Conclusions. In children with the pain sensation in the area of the lower spine, the deep muscles are being inhibited and their timing is being disrupted. First tighten the large surface muscles responsible for the execution of movement, and then the local center stabilizers get engaged. The role changing between the groups of muscles may be causing overload problems, thus it is important to provide the appropriate rehabilitation, which would support the core stability.

E. Puszczałowska-Lizis, P. Bujas, J. Omorczyk, L. Nosiadek. Sexual dimorphism in foot morphology in women and men over 60. FP 2016; 16(3); 88-94

Abstract
Background. The human foot is a supportive and locomotive element, which forms during a whole life in individual manner for every person. In advanced age, the foot is particularly exposed to involutionary changes. The aim of this study was to determine the dimorphic differences in the selected morphological features of the feet in women and men aged over 60.
Material and methods. The research conducted by podoscopic method involved seniors from the Podkarpackie and the Małopolskie voivodeships, including 116 females and 82 males. Tested persons were divided into three age groups (60-69 years, 70-79 years, 80-90 years). The following indices were analyzed: the Clarke’s angle, heel angle (γ), hallux valgus angle (α), and the V toe varus deformity angle (β). Basic descriptive statistics were calculated. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to assess significance of the differences in morphological features of the feet between the women and men.
Results. In both sexes the analysed indices worsened in comparison to the normative values. Statistically significant differences between woman and man concern the Clarke’s angle and the hallux valgus angle (α).
Conclusions. The most important plantographic features which differentiate the feet structure of women and men aged over 60 are Clark’s angle and the hallux valgus angle (α). The popularisation of preventative kinesiotherapy for the elderly should constitute an indispensable element of action aimed at slowing down involution processes to maintain the optimal – according to age – static and dynamic conditions of the locomotion system.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.56984/8ZG13C49A

Abstract
Purpose of this study. Evaluation of the patient’s life quality after operational treatment of the breast cancer – mastectomy, and determination of any correlation between made rehabilitation and participation in a support group.
Material and methods. The research was conducted using a questionnaire that included open and closed questions, it had 25 questions concerning patient’s condition before and after operation.
Results. Most women use physiotherapy (88%) and support offered by Amazon Clubs (88%). The most popular form of rehabilitation appeared to be kinesiotherapy (94%) and massage (70%). It was observed that the upper limb at operated side had reduced efficiency, after operation as good it was assumed only by 16% of total. Most women stated that their emotional condition had not changed after operation (32%) or slightly worsen (24%). None of the women declared lack of acceptance for their condition after amputation. As many as 48% did not seen any influence of the mastectomy on the quality of life, and for 36% the change was negative.
Conclusions. It may not be clearly stated if bigger influence on the self assessment of the quality of life has directly only physiotherapy or the Amazon Club that builds so important psychosocial relations, it proves complexity of the rehabilitation treatment. It is required to combine oncologic treatment with physiotherapeutic procedures and activity of social organizations, as all these aspects have beneficial influence on the women’s self-esteem after mastectomy.

S. Fugiel, M. Kiljański – Comparison of injury rate among members of selected handball teams (men’s Super League and First Division), 2014/2015 season. FP 2016; 16(3); 68-78

Abstract
Introduction. Sport injury needs to be considered a major issue, both in amateur and competitive circumstances; it often limits athletes’ ability or totally prevents them from performing their professional activities. A number of handball teams in Poland fail to provide adequate medical facilities, which results in the situation where the players’ health is not satisfactorily cared for.
Aim. The aim of this paper is to analyse the injury rate among members of selected handball teams from men’s Super League and First Division, 2014/2015 season.
The respondents who participated in this study play in 4 different teams, 2 teams are currently in Super League and 2 in the First Division. The data was collected between August and October 2015 and the questions discussed only the sport injuries suffered in the 2014/2015 season. Injury rate coefficient was then calculated, based on the following formula: Number of injuries x 1000 hours / Actual time of injury risk exposure.
Results. The highest injury rate coefficient was calculated for Team 1, 7.86. This left the remaining teams behind with the coefficient value of 5.20 for Team 3, 3.93 for Team 4 and only 2.63 for Team 2. Injury rate coefficient calculated for these players who have been subject to screening examination and received a tailored result correction programme was recorded at the level of 2.71, as compared to 7.02 calculated for the players who have not been examined and received correction therapy. In general, handball players experienced injury primarily during the execution of a throw; these incidences amounted to 30.4% of all injuries.
Conclusions. Physiotherapist and his involvement in a handball team reduces the risk of sport injuries. Screening examination of musculoskeletal system, as well as tailored result correction programme, significantly reduce the risk of sport injuries. Therefore, technique improving exercise programmes should be created and incorporated into handball training, practising safe, injury risk-free way of executing a throw.

K. Załoga, G. Brzuszkiewicz-Kuźmicka, A. Kuźmicka, Z. Śliwiński – Kinesio Taping and its effect on weight distribution on feet after hallux valgus corrective surgery, assessed with the use of pedobaroscope FP 2016; 16(3); 50-57

Abstract
Introduction. Our foot, one of the most important elements of the human musculoskeletal system, is particularly vulnerable to a wide range of strains and injuries. One of the common foot health problems is hallux valgus. The treatment of hallux valgus may involve both preservative and surgical procedures.
Research goal. Kinesio Taping and its effect on weight distribution on feet and its validity as supportive therapy after hallux valgus corrective surgery.
Material and methods. The study comprised 32 patients after hallux valgus corrective surgery. The patients were tested on the ground reaction force platform. Mechanical correction taping on hallux valgus was applied. Results. The level of significance of the load values on the operated limb was calculated as well as the significance of the load on the forefoot of the operated limb; respectively: p = 0.44, p = 0.23. The calculated correlation coefficient of the load on the operated foot and the load on the forefoot of the operated foot, following the application of Kinesio Taping presented statistical significance at the level of p = 0.01.
Conclusions. Mechanical correction using Kinesio Taping can serve as an efficient support to the main therapy. It must be remembered, however, that it ultimately it cannot be used as the treatment substitution. The concluded research indicates that Kinesio Taping helps to restore the proper load distribution on a foot and supports putting more weight on the first foot radius. The most encouraging results were obtained in the tests in which both tapes were used during the treatment.

Abstract
Purpose of this study. Functional Movement System™ is a concept created by Cook and Burton, that allows functional evaluation of movement patterns. The purpose of this study was to compare movement patterns in contestants of the three sports disciplines, determination of weak links in the cinematic chain.   Additionally, it was attempted to determine which motor organ is most exposed to incorrect movement patterns in contestants of individual disciplines.
Material and methods. In the study evaluation included movement patterns of 60 contestants that train box, judo and kickboxing by means of FMS™, including 20 women and 40 men, at the age from 18 to 30 years. The investigated persons were divided in three groups, where qualification criterion for each group was type of trained martial art or sport and training seniority.
Results. Difference between boxers, kickboxers and judokas were observed only within individual movement patterns. Their global quality was comparable for all persons.
Conclusions. Final results of FMS™ test were not statistically significantly different due to type of trained martial art or sport. In judokas it the most asymmetry was during individual tests, as many as 30% of investigated receive the lowest average result in FMS™ tests, that suggest implementation of corrective training. The areas that were most exposed in boxers and kickboxers appeared to be spine lumbar section and shoulder joint area, and in boxers only spine lumbar section.

W. Kiebzak, B. Książkiewicz, M. Kosztołowicz, M. Kiebzak – Using Relation Index Wr in Radiologic Diagnosis. FP 2016; 16(3); 34-41

Abstract
Introduction. In treatment procedure, due to strategy and evaluation of changes, high importance has precise medical physiotherapeutic diagnosis. In this study it was substantiated that the chest X-ray picture evaluated in ILO (International Labour Organization) classification is less precise method in diagnosis of silicosis that HRCT (High Resolution Computed Tomography) examination.
Purpose of This Study. Using the relative index Wr in diagnosing silicosis nodules in classical radiography evaluated in ILO and received using the HRCT method to check effectiveness of the both methods.
Material and Method. From the group of 358 patients with diagnosed silicosis, 65 males were selected in whom the HRCT chest examinations were made in an interval not longer than 6 months from the last X-ray picture in ILO classification. In each patient on the X-ray picture and the HRTC exam the diameters of the smallest and the biggest nodules were measured. Then, an average values from nodule measurements were calculated in each exam.
To achieve results, the following statistical methods were used: scale T1 [1],
relation index Wr, in intervals: Wr∈[0.9; 1.1], Wr<0.9 and Wr>1.1. In these intervals, the correlation coefficients between nodule diameters in ILO classification and HRCT using Pearson’s method.
Results. The correlation between average nodule diameters in individual Wr intervals is very high or very certain and H0 was rejected (exceptional is Wr>1.1 interval for rosettes). Therefore, it was demonstrated that the chest X-ray picture evaluated in the ILO classification and the HRCT examination similarly allow diagnosing the disease – silicosis, but the type of nodules may be found only using the HRCT.
Conclusions. The HRCT method is more efficient than the classic chest X-ray as it detects nodule types, namely  centrilobular, under pleural, peribronchovascular rosettes and tree budding.
