Abstract Objective. The objective of this study was to explore the mediators (pain self-efficacy, pain catastrophizing, back pain beliefs) of Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE) on disability for patients with chronic low back pain (LBP) in Saudi Arabia (SA). Methods. An observational multisite pre-post study design was utilized. This study was done at the Physical Therapy (PT) Clinics related to the Ministry of Health in SA, from December 2020 to December 2021. Chronic LBP patients were recruited into a 2-week PT program. Ten eligible physical therapists across six PT clinics were involved in the study who treat musculoskeletal and LBP patients. There were two groups (usual care of physical therapy “US-PT” vs. “PNE”). The mediators and disability were evaluated at the baseline (T0) and 2-week follow-up (T1). Results. A total of 249 patients met the selection criteria and consented to participate in the study. 131 patients received UC-PT only and 118 patients received PNE in addition to UC-PT. Baseline patient characteristics showed the mean age was 41.41 (SD = 12.03), and 144 of the participants (57.8%) were female. Increased pain self-efficacy (95% CI = −3.99, −1.15), decreased pain catastrophizing (95% CI = −3.42, −0.88), and decreased belief that they were disabled by pain (95% CI = −2.43, −0.33) fully mediated the PNE effect on disability at a 2-week interval. Conclusion. PNE participants showed greater improvement from baseline to 2 weeks on each cognitive factor hypothesized to mediate the effect of PNE on disability. The study results provided guidance on how to target treatment recommendations to gain the maximum benefits from PNE. Also, this study generated evidence that is useful for physical therapists and researchers to improve PNE to optimize chronic LBP patient outcomes.

Ibrahim Metwally Dewir

Ibrahim Metwally Dewir – Work-related musculoskeletal pain among physical therapists: A cross-sectional study in Taif, Saudi Arabia –  Fizjoterapia Polska 2024; 24(4); 161-170

DOI: https://doi.org/10.56984/8ZG01A8W8Z6

Abstract
Objectives. Although musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) are one of the most significant issues facing physiotherapists globally, little is known about their characteristics among those practicing in Taif City, Saudi Arabia. This study examined the prevalence, work-related variables, and physiotherapists’ responses to work related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMDs) in Taif City, Saudi Arabia.
Methods. Physiotherapists in Taif City, Saudi Arabia were given a questionnaire comprising items derived from the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire as part of a cross-sectional survey. A total of 120 copies of the self-administered questionnaire were provided; however, only 96 were returned, representing an 80% response rate.
Results. In Taif City, Saudi Arabian physical therapists reported a 91.7% prevalence of WMSDs. The most common anatomic areas in the past year were the lower back (24%), neck (18%), and shoulder (17%). With percentages of 16.7%, 15.6%, and 12.5%, respectively, treating more patients in a day, lifting patients, and using manual therapy techniques appear to be the most important contributing risk factors.
Discussion. These results highlight the importance of providing ergonomic and effective intervention training programs for Saudi Arabian physical therapists to reduce WMSDs and enhance working conditions.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.56984/8ZG01A8G4H8

Abstract
Varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency of the lower limbs are common conditions affecting individuals of working age. The symptoms of these diseases are burdensome and can hinder or even prevent the performance of work-related tasks. Numerous factors may contribute to the development of these conditions. Physical therapists, particularly those who perform their duties predominantly in a standing position, should pay special attention to risk factors and preventive measures for varicose veins and venous insufficiency. This awareness can help in preventing the onset of these diseases. This paper presents the prevalence, risk factors, and prevention methods for varicose veins and venous insufficiency in the lower limbs.

Damian Durlak – Social security for physiotherapists. Fizjoterapia Polska 2023; 23(3); 116-119

DOI: https://doi.org/10.56984/8ZG143Sbq

Abstract
Due to the specificity of their profession, physiotherapists are particularly exposed to accidents at work. The existing social insurance in Poland, however, allows them to be protected in the event of incapacity for work. This article covers the most important issues regarding the definition and types of social security that can be used by physiotherapists. The link between labor law and social security is described. The benefits that an employee is entitled to in the event of an accident at work or an occupational disease are also presented. Due to the demanding work and the risk of an accident at work, it is important that physiotherapists are aware of their rights and obligations and, if necessary, that they use social security.

Abstract

A physiotherapist running or thinking of starting his/her own business must take into account many factors affecting business profitability. All predictable costs, as well as sudden crises and geopolitical changes should be considered due to their significant impact on the ability to continue running the business. Recent changes in tax policy and geopolitical turmoil make the analysis even more difficult, and its results not always optimistic.

Damian Durlak – Opinion of physiotherapists on the impact of the work of the Data Protection Officer on the security of patient data. Fizjoterapia Polska 2021; 21(5); 32-37

Abstract
Introduction. Due to constant need for protection of patients’ personal data and for up-to-date knowledge about personal data protection law and Data Protection Officer’s (DPO) role in healthcare it is crucial for physiotherapists that work in their profession to have actual knowledge about the law and individuals they can ask for help with data protection issues.
Aim. The aim of this research was to assess whether there exists a statistically important correlation between respondents’ sociodemographic characteristics and their opinions and knowledge about personal data protection law and DPO’s functions.
Methods. An author’s custom survey form was used. The survey was conducted on a group of 101 physiotherapists actively working in their profession.
Results. Physiotherapists questioned felt the need to refresh their knowledge about medical law. They did not have faith in DPO regarding his possibility to improve data security and quality of services offered. At the same time, they witnessed data security breach. Most of the variables used were statistically significantly correlated.
Summary. Education programs concerning personal data protection, medical law and DPO’s roles should be conducted at medical facilities. Employees’ higher knowledge about this topic allows to secure both physiotherapists’ and patients’ interests.
