DOI: https://doi.org/10.56984/8ZG1420LR

Abstract
Objective. To study if different cervical mobilizations have a long-term effect on pain relief and strengthening of external rotators and abductors in rotator cuff tendinitis. Method. Seventy-five patients with rotator cuff tendinitis were recruited from outpatient clinic, with age ranged from 25 to 40 years. Group A: C5-6 antero-posterior cervical mobilization and ultrasound therapy. Group B: C5-6 lateral glide cervical mobilization and Ultrasound. Group C: C5-6 Postero-anterior cervical mobilization and US. The Visual Analogue Scale measured pain severity level and Lafayette Manual Muscle Tester measured shoulder external rotators and abductors isometric muscle strength. Results. The Wilcoxon test revealed a statistically significant difference in shoulder external rotators, abductors strength, and pain reduction between pre, immediate post-mobilization, 10 minutes post-mobilization, and 30 minutes post-mobilization within the three groups. But, the immediate post-mobilization and 10 minute post-mobilization median values of external rotators were statistically significant differences among the three groups, while the 30 minute post-mobilization median values of external rotators were not. For Abductors: Among the three groups, there were no statistically significant differences in abductors’ immediate post-mobilization, 10 minute post-mobilization, or 30 minute post-mobilization, but there were statistically significant differences in pain scores immediate post-mobilization, 10 minute post-mobilization, and 30 minute post-mobilization. Conclusion. The study found that all three kinds of cervical mobilization are useful in reducing pain and strengthening the external rotators and abductors muscles and that the most effective method is antero-posterior in treating rotator cuff tendinitis.

Abstract

Background. The aim of the study was to determine the usefulness of selected anthropometric features in predicting the development of impairment of the strength of thumb & finger flexors after radical mastectomy. Material and methods. The analysis included 126 women who had undergone a radical operation for breast cancer. The strength of flexors of the fingers & thumb was evaluated before surgery and during 12-month follow-up. The results of muscle strength tests were referred to 15 anthropometric traits. Results. 23.8% of the women did not regain pre-surgery muscle strength, as attested by the results of all muscle strength measurements. There were statistically significant differences in mean body mass and the BM and Quetelet’s indices between women with persistent post-operative impairment of muscle strength and those who regained muscle strength following a radical mastectomy. Conclusions. Impairment of muscle strength below reference values in the finger & thumb flexors was seen in 23.8% of the mastectomy patients. Grasp strength decreases were most strongly correlated with body mass (correlation index 0.67). Post-operative weakening of the hand was significantly correlated with high body mass (>71.1 kg) and high values of the following indices: BMI (>29.8) and Quetelet’s index (>412).

M. Drężewska, E. Frączek, Z. Śliwiński – The Assessment of Impact of the Kinesiology Taping on Changes in the Selected Motor Skills in the Hypermobile Female Dancers. FP 2016;16(1);6-22

Abstract
Background. Both physical and mental effort undertaken in pursuit of perfection in the dance makes improving the quality of motor skills for dancers is just as important as the development of skills. In the literature there are reports that Kinesiology Taping facilitates muscle activity which contributes to increase their strength. The aim of the study was to eval-uate the effectiveness of KT application in improving muscle strength in female dancers with joint hipermobility after injury.
Material and methods. The research involved 44 jazz female dancers with musculoskeletal pain in lower part of the body. Average age of dancers was M = 20,12; SD = 2,88; Min = 18; Max = 25. All patients reported joint hipermobility by Sachse. In the dancers KT applications for three weeks, three times were used for selected groups of muscles, peripheral joints and spine after a screening test. Before and after treatment muscle strength of selected muscles were measured using a dynamometer MicroFet2.
Results. The analysis results indicate that the use of KT applications significantly contributed to the increased muscle strength following: quadratus lumborum, piriformis, gluteus medius, gluteus maximus, iliopsoas, biceps femoris, semitendinosus ald semimembranosus and adduc-tors (p < 0,005). There was no statistically significant difference in muscle strength after ap-plications for: latissimus dorsi, rectus femoris and tensor fascie late (p > 0,05).
Conclusions. Applications KT of dancers hypermobility of musculoskeletal pains have sub-stantial impact on the muscle tone and strength of muscle examined.
