Premenstrual syndrome and its biopsychosocial symptoms among physiotherapy students in Eastern Delta: An exploratory study

Abstract

Background. During the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, a set of clinically significant physical and psychological symptoms known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) emerge. This condition can be extremely distressing and hinder females’ ability to work.
Purpose. To calculate the prevalence and severity of PMS and its biopsychosocial symptoms in female physiotherapy students in Eastern Delta and to investigate the relationship between various socio-demographic and reproductive factors.
Methods. At Delta University for Science and Technology in Gamasa, Egypt, 396 female physiotherapy students participated in an exploratory cross-sectional survey with a mean age of 20.23±1.07 years and BMI with a mean of 28.86 ± 5.05 kg/m2. The premenstrual syndrome scale (PMSS) was adopted to assess the prevalence of PMS and related symptoms, and a self-administered questionnaire was used to gauge sociodemographic and reproductive data.
Results: Three hundred ninety-six females of 438 females completed the study. In 85% of cases, PMS predominated research calculations. The PMS group displayed symptoms of fatigue, cramping in the abdomen, tension, mood fluctuations, and decreased productivity more overtly. According to a multiple linear regression analysis, living in a rural area, hitting menarche earlier, having a higher BMI, and having a family history were all significantly linked to PMS (p < 0.05). Conclusion. Female students have a high prevalence of PMS and its biopsychosocial symptoms. Therefore, adoption of preventive reproductive health and counseling services should be implemented as a standard component of routine clinical treatment for university students.

Knowledge, skills and perceptions of COVID-19 among physiotherapy students in the United Arab Emirates: A Qualitative Study

Abstract
Aims. The aims of this qualitative study were to explore how physiotherapy students in the United Arab Emirates employed their knowledge and skills to stay safe during COVID-19, and utilized their critical appraisal skills in verifying public information on COVID-19. Material and methods. Forty-four undergraduate physiotherapy students were recruited for the study from health science educational institute in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. One to one semi-structured interviews were conducted and, the data was analyzed using thematic analysis.
Result & Conclusion. The study found that during COVID-19, the students of physiotherapy were updated with the necessary information to understand the newly emerged virus. The participants played an active role in educating themselves and their families about infection control measures and maintained proper hygiene to stay safe during the pandemic. Additionally, participants were able to critically analyse information using the knowledge and skills learnt in their program. Moreover, hands on experiences incorporated with respiratory modules were particularly found to be useful for students, as they seemed to have acceptable and updated knowledge on symptoms of COVID-19, the mechanism of infection transmission and physiotherapy interventions. The study also highlighted the need to integrate more hands-on approaches to the current curriculum in order to meet the growing need for health care professional to combat the COVID-19.

Cultural Good as the Basis of Culture and Ethics

Abstract

Introduction. The ethical culture of physiotherapists encompass their attitudes and ethical beliefs, at every stage of their education and the actual job performance. The professional culture may be created by introducing the adequate ethics program. Both culture and ethics complement each other, and they reinforce the new principles and attitudes of people. The culture plays an important role in the daily life of every professional group, providing a common language and a shared way of behavior.
Aim of the Study. The aim of the study is to find a method allowing to formulate the definition of cultural good based on the results of used questions.
Materials and Methods. In the study participated a group of 141 persons who, at the time, were physiotherapy students. The study was carried out at the turn of 2015 and 2016. The research tool applied is a questionnaire. The method used to evaluate the results is the chi-squared test (χ2).
Results. The results have shown, that the physiotherapy students considered the following as cultural goods: esteem for health, propriety, tact, kindness, and responsibility, however these values are poorly related to the satisfaction derived from the fact of studying the physiotherapy.
Conclusion. The cultural good serves people, in a positive sense, through existence of the ethical triad, which should lead to the effective, positive man-to-man interaction.

The assessment of the attitude towards physical activity among the Physiotherapy students of Warsaw Medical University (WMU) and the students of Physical Education Academy (PEA)

Abstract

Physical activity is a key integrating element of a healthy lifestyle. Physical Fitness determines the resourcefulness in various life situations, its high level may facilitate work, broaden the capabilities and contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Studies show that physical therapists are particularly predisposed to promote a healthy lifestyle among the medical patients. On the other hand, due to the nature of their work, they are at risk of muscular and skeletal injuries.
The objective was to assess the Warsaw Medical University (WMU) and the Academy of Physical Education (APE) Physiotherapy Students’ attitude toward physical activity and physical fitness.
Methodology. Examined was a group of 90 students (37 females, 9 males from WMU and 22 females, 22 males from PEA) of the age 22.7 on average ±2.0 years. Prepared questionnaire designed to assess attitudes toward physical activity was used. The level of physical fitness of the investigated students was examined with International Physical Fitness Test.
Results. The number of physical activity hours is significantly lower at the Medical University (1.6 ±1.5) than PE Academy (3.6 ±1.7), p<0,001. Very high (80%) interest in physical activity during leisure time has been demonstrated, with higher tendency among Physiotherapy PEA students than the WMU students (p = 0.07). A significantly lower level of physical fitness among WMU students, as compared to PEA students, was also found.
Conclusions. 1. Very high interest in physical activity during leisure time, in both groups, should be taken advantage of and developed in educational process. 2. Medical University students presented a much lower fitness level than PEA students, which may have resulted from fewer hours of physical activities at the Medical University of Warsaw (WMU). 3. Due to higher expectations in case of physiotherapists, it seems that physical fitness should be one of the recruitment process criteria at Medical University of Warsaw.
