Abstract
Introduction. The benefits attributed to running include: improving mental and physical health, weight control, as well as reducing stress. However, the occurrence of injuries in this sport is common and carries consequences that can permanently affect the body. Nowadays, modern methods are being analyzed to counteract incorrect training loads, which are assessed on the basis of the multifactorial risk of their formation. In addition, an important aspect that allows for a faster, post-injury return to efficient running is the use of a properly selected rehabilitation protocol.
Purpose of research. The main aim of the study was to determine the risk factors and frequency of the most common injuries among amateur runners.
Material and methods. The study group consisted of 100 adults living in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship, randomly selected (38 women and 62 men). The method of diagnostic survey was used in the work. The research tool was an original questionnaire examining the occurrence, types and locations of injuries in recreational runners.
Results. A statistically significant correlation was found between the body weight of an amateur runner
and the frequency of injury (p < 0.001). At the same time, there was a significant relationship between the warm-up performed before training and the occurrence of injury (p < 0.001). Noticeable effects of physiotherapy were demonstrated (p = 0.016). It was concluded that the preventive use of physiotherapy influenced (p = 0.038) the prevention of recurrent injuries.
Conclusions. Excessive body weight in respondents was associated with a higher risk of injury compared to people with appropriate body weight in the study group. The use of physiotherapy after an injury resulted in a much faster return to physical activity compared to people from the group without physiotherapy.

Injuries and diseases of the knee joint – diagnostic evaluation

Jerzy Widuchowski, Wojciech Widuchowski

Jerzy Widuchowski, Wojciech Widuchowski – Injuries and diseases of the knee joint – diagnostic evaluation. Fizjoterapia Polska 2004; 4(4); 297-306

Abstract

In traumatic injuries and diseases of the knee joint establishing a correct diagnosis is a very important part of therapeutic management. In many cases it is not easy. The reason for this is the possibility of simultaneous injury of many different anatomical joint structures, and as a result the occurrence of clinical symptoms that vary in intensity and often overlap. In diagnostic procedures, the most important task is to establish which of the anatomical structures has been damaged as a result of acute or chronic trauma, and how extensive the loss of joint function actually is. Making a correct diagnosis in acute traumatic injuries of the knee should be done as quickly as possible. The present study contains an outline of diagnostic evaluation in traumatic injuries and diseases of the knee joint. Each part of this outline is fully discussed.

Aneta Bac, Urszula Niemiec, Edward Golec – Long-term evaluation of treatment of traumatic injuries and motor organ overuse syndromes in archers. Fizjoterapia Polska 2011; 11(2); 155-168

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to characterize most common injuries and overuse syndromes observed in archery, to evaluate their influence on further sports careers and to determine what treatment methods are most commonly applied in these conditions. The sample comprised 48 top Polish archers, representing the champion class and the international champion class. Selection of the subjects was based on the survey carried out during the Polish Senior Championship held in August 2009 in Krakow. The survey was performed using the tailored questionnaire comprising 31 closed questions, divided into two parts. The first part of the questionnaire included the questions concerning the frequency and volume of training sessions, time devoted to warm up exercises, etc. while the second part pertained to fatigue and its causes as well as to injuries and their treatment.Pain and fatigue symptoms were most frequently noted in the shoulder area (38 subjects = 79.1%). The body areas where pain was least frequently observed included the elbow (4 subjects = 8.3%) and forearm (3 subjects = 6.2%). The prevailing part of injuries (26 cases = 60.5%) involved muscles and ligaments. In 16 archers (37.2%) such injuries were noted in joints and periarticular tissues and in only in 1 subject (2.3%) the nerves were involved. The most frequent method of treatment was rehabilitation (30%) and the rarest procedure was application of steroid drugs (5%). The most frequent method of rehabilitation applied in the research group was magnetotherapy (44% of the research group) while acupuncture was the rarest approach applied in this study (1%). In 6 archers (18.7%) the injuy did not have any significant effect on their sport performance. Deterioration in athletic performance was initially observed in 20 archers (62.6%), but after some time their performance reached normal levels. However, 6 archers (18.7%) failed to regain their baseline performance levels. The study subjects most frequently sustained soft tissue injuries in the area of shoulder joint. Physiotherapy was the most frequently applied approach in this study. The more frequently the examined subjects experienced injury consequences, the more commonly surgical treatment was applied. In the studied sample the women trained less frequently than the men.

Fizjoterapia Polska 2021; 21(1); 54-61

Abstract
Introduction. Contemporary sports physiotherapy has various methods of treating patients. Currently, Kinesiology Taping has become one of the most popular and inherent prophylactic methods supporting treatment after injuries within the musculoskeletal system. This technique allows the space between the skin and the fascia to be opened, which allows for better microcirculation and thus faster regeneration processes.
Objective. The objective of the study was to assess the pain and the results of Kinesiology Taping in the studied volleyball players after injuries of various parts of the body.
Materials and method. The study assessed the effect of Kinesiology Taping as a physiotherapeutic method that is commonly used after injuries in professional volleyball players. The study covered 72 players diagnosed with a motor organ dysfunction that occurred during physical activity related to practicing a given discipline.
Results. The study showed the relationship between the change in pain intensity assessed using the VAS scale and the application of Kinesiology Taping (Student’s t-test). The test showed a relationship between the use of taping and the reduction of pain, which was statistically significant for all injured parts of the body (p < 0.05).
Conclusions. In the assessment of the studied volleyball players, Kinesiology Taping of the areas of the body presented in the study was effective. There was a decrease in the value of pain assessed according to the scale.

J. Pasek, T. Stołtny, M. Szczęśniak, B. Dugiełło, W. Gąsior, M. Czarnecki, J. Jaczyński, B. Koczy – Algorithm of physiotherapy after traumatic injury of the Achilles tendon. Fizjoterapia Polska 2020; 20(2); 76-87

Abstract

Achilles tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in the human body. Due to its key function in motor skills and the currently observed increase in popularity of various sports disciplines, it is subject to more frequent injuries. This requires the introduction of appropriate therapeutic measures. The main goal of the whole treatment process is to ensure the full recovery of tendon function. In cases of a full tendon ruptures, the treatment of choice is surgery unless it is contraindicated for general medical reasons. In both cases, proper physiotherapy is needed. In the article, the authors present an algorithm for physiotherapy after traumatic injury to the Achilles tendon.

Abstract

Introduction. The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and injuries associated with the physiotherapy profession, as well as to analyze work activities related to professional practice predisposing to injury.
Material and methods. The study was conducted among 150 randomly selected physiotherapists. The questionnaire designed by the authors, included questions about sociodemographic data, work characteristics, the incidence of pain and injury which occurred while performing professional activities, location of the injury and the type of activity during which the injury occurred.
Results. 99% of physiotherapists reported to feel pain associated with performing job activities and 61% had suffered an injury of the musculoskeletal system that was clearly caused by their work. Injuries were most often located in the lumbosacral spine, wrist and hand as well as in the cervical spine.
Conclusions. 1. Musculoskeletal pain and injuries are an important issue among physiotherapists. 2. They are most often located in the lumbosacral spine, wrist and hand as well as in the cervical spine 3.Lifting and moving patients or equipment, performing massage and passive exercises are the most common activities related to pain development and the occurrence of injury. 4. High incidence of work-related pain and injuries results from the insufficient application of ergonomics by physiotherapists, as well as from the inadequate adaptation of the workplace. 5. To maintain and prolong the ability to work in a physiotherapy profession it is necessary to provide an appropriate ergonomics training among physiotherapists and consistent monitoring of compliance with the principles of ergonomics by superiors.
