Correlation between physical activity with body mass index and body fat percentage: A study of final year students in junior high school

Abstract
Study purpose. This study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity (PA), body mass index (BMI), and body fat percentage in final-year students at the junior high school level.
Methods. This research is quantitative with a correlational research design. The subjects in this study were 9th-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Jogoroto who were selected using random sampling techniques. A total of 58 students (29 boys and 29 girls) were randomly selected and volunteered to participate in this study. PA levels were measured using the IPAQ questionnaire, body fat percentage was measured using the Tanita InnerScan Body Composition Monitor scales model BC-541, and BMI was obtained from the formula = body weight (kg)/body height² (m). The data analysis technique uses descriptive statistical tests and Spearman’s rho rank correlation with the help of Microsoft Excel 2016 and SPSS version 25.
Results. The results of the correlation test show that the correlation coefficient is negative and the significance is greater than 0.05 between PA and BMI (r = −0.162, p = 0.225 > 0.05) and body fat percentage (r = -0.095, p = 0.480 > 0.05). It can be said that these two relationships are weak, while BMI and body fat percentage have a positive correlation and significance less than 0.05 (r = 0.779, p = 0.000 < 0.05), indicating that BMI and body fat percentage have a strong correlation.
Conclusions. The conclusion is that PA is negatively correlated with BMI and body fat percentage, although neither relationship is significant. However, BMI was found to have a positive and significant correlation with body fat percentage in students. Therefore, it is recommended that students maintain their PA in line with WHO recommendations and keep their BMI within the normal range. If your BMI is normal, it is likely that your body fat percentage is also normal.

Abstract
Introduction. Sarcopenia, marked by a progressive decline in muscle strength and physical performance with age, is increasingly acknowledged as a critical public health concern, particularly in the context of cardiovascular diseases. While sarcopenia can manifest at any age, the condition is more commonly observed in older adults, as the natural aging process, along with various factors including inadequate nutrition, inactivity, and conditions characterized by inflammation, contribute to the progressive loss of muscle performance and power over time. Notably, the emergence of “sarcopenic obesity” has become a growing global phenomenon, characterized by a simultaneous decline in muscle quantity and functionality alongside an excess of adipose tissue, primarily visceral. This combination of factors poses a significant risk for circulatory disorders and glucose metabolism disorders, as the accumulation of visceral fat around critical organs can stimulate systemic inflammation.
Objective. Furthermore, stroke-induced sarcopenia has been recognized as a distinct condition, where the muscle wasting and disability experienced by stroke patients can have profound implications for their overall health and recovery. This narrative review aims to synthesize the current evidence on the extent of sarcopenia and its association with cardiovascular diseases.
Methods. Sarcopenia is increasingly common, with research showing that approximately 50% of patients needing rehabilitation exhibit this condition. It is linked to significant negative outcomes, including impaired physical function, difficulty swallowing, malnutrition, and a lower chance of returning home.
Results. The review of recent studies highlights the growing body of findings demonstrating a link between sarcopenia and cardiovascular risk, particularly in the context of stroke.
Conclusions. Incorporating routine screening and targeted interventions for sarcopenia into clinical practice may have significant implications for improving cardiovascular health and patient outcomes.

Abstract
The prevalence of unhealthy weight and its potential impact on fitness, neuromuscular control, and injury risk has raised concerns within the realm of sports science. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and injuries among sport science recreational badminton players. One-shot case study research design was employed, involving 40 sport science recreational badminton players from University Pendidikan Sultan Idris as participants. Data were collected using a self-designed questionnaire, which included BMI measurements and injury history. The analysis of the collected data revealed that the majority of participants had a normal body weight (65.9%) according to their BMI. The highest proportion of reported injuries was attributed to ankle sprains, accounting for 37% of the total injuries. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation test indicated that there was no significant relationship between BMI and injuries among sport science recreational badminton players. The present study concludes that there is no significant association between BMI and the number of injuries among sport science recreational badminton players. Although higher BMI has been previously linked to poorer fitness, decreased neuromuscular control, and increased injury risk. The findings of this study suggest that other factors might influence the occurrence of injuries in this specific population. Further research is needed to explore additional determinants of injury risk among badminton players and the role of physiotherapist or health care providers to develop appropriate injury prevention strategies in this sport.

Abstract
Background and Study Aim. Adolescence is characterized as a critical stage in the development of health-related habits, whose importance extends beyond this period, as they predict health-related behaviors in adulthood. The main objective of this study was to analyze differences in body mass index, physical self-concept, and self-confidence of adolescent boys and girls.
Materials and Methods. This is a comparative research. The population in this study was adolescents aged 13-19 years with a random sampling technique of 94 people (male 53, female 41). Inclusion criteria for adolescent students in this study include the absence of any disease-related limitations. The instruments used were Body Mass Index, Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP), and a self-confidence questionnaire. The statistical analysis technique used the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 21 software. The level of statistical significance was set at p-value < 0.05.
Results. The results of the analysis showed that: (1) Body Mass Index of adolescent girls is higher than boys (p-value < 0.05). (2) Physical Self-Concept of adolescent girls is higher than that of boys (p-value < 0.05). (3) Self-Confidence of adolescent boys is better than that of girls (p-value < 0.05).
Conclusions. The results of this study are expected to be a guideline for schools and health agencies to pay attention to the psychological health conditions of adolescents. Adolescents are expected to improve their body image with a confident attitude in order to avoid psychological problems.

Abstract
Aerobic exercise has been widely recognized as an efficacious intervention for enhancing students’ body mass index and waist circumference, particularly among individuals classified as overweight and obese. However, a comprehensive search for studies conducted within the context of higher education in the Indonesia yielded no existing research. This study investigates the impact of aerobic activities on male students aged 20 – 22 [(N21 YEARS OLD = 9(45.00%), N20 YEARS OLD = 7(35.00%), N22 YEARS OLD = 4(20.00%); age mean of mean = 20.85 ± 0.75] from a selected higher education institution in the country. The present study employed an experimental research methodology, utilizing a sample of male college students who were overweight or obese. The sample size was divided equally, with a total of 20 participants (N = 20). The participants engaged in a 12-week aerobic fitness regimen consisting of one-hour session, three times per week. Independent samples t-test was used to examine the difference in the performance of both groups in relation to their BMI and WC post-test scores, while paired t-test was employed to compare the difference in the pre-test and post-test scores on participants’ BMI and WC. Based on the results, a notable disparity in performance was detected between the two groups, with obese students demonstrating a considerable enhancement in their BMI [t(15.887) = −9.797, p < 0.05]. On the other hand, no significant difference was observed in the performance of the groups in terms of WC [t(16.665) = −0.505, p = 0.620]. A notable disparity was noted in the pre- and post-test scores of the participants’ BMI and WC subsequent to engaging in a 12-week regimen of aerobic exercise, both in a general sense (BMI [t(19) = 14.439, p < 0.05 and WC t(19) = 14.333, p < 0.05) and within each group [Overweight: BMI t(9) = 14.488, p < 0.05] and WC t(9) = 15.057, p < 0.05; Obese: BMI t(9) = 7.922, p < 0.05] and WC t(9) = 7.746, p < 0.05]. Based on the findings, it can be inferred that involving male students who are overweight or obese in a meticulously planned aerobic exercise regimen has the potential to yield substantial improvements in their BMI and WC. This, in turn, may lead to increased performance in physical activity. Limitations and future research endeavors are hereby presented.

Abstract
The High-Intensity Interval Training program quickly became one of the most popular exercise regiments due to its ability to improve health by significantly impacting the body. This experimental study focused on determining the effectiveness of a 1-month High-Intensity Interval Training program to 10 selected clients which are classified as overweight and obese. Based on the findings, it was found that after participating in High-Intensity Interval Training for one month, most of the participants successfully reduced body measurements, vital signs, and body mass index. In terms of girth measurements, participants’ abdomen, chest and waist circumference improved significantly; while forearm and the legs have a slight significant difference. Based on blood pressure, it was observed that High-Intensity Interval Training may positively help to keep blood pressure in the normal range. However, no evidence to imply that this particular program can regulate it. Lastly, based on the pre- and post-test scores of the clients, it was observed that High-Intensity Interval Training program has a significant effect on the improvement on their girth measurement, vital signs, and body mass index. Performing a similar study to support or repudiate the claims of this study is highly recommended.

Abstract
Examining the impacts of blended and online learning settings on children’s fitness and body mass index in a sample of public elementary school pupils in the Philippines is the main objective of this study. A 16-week pre-test and post-test control group in a quasi-experimental approach. The experimental group received blended education, whereas the control group exclusively took classes online. The experimental and control groups consisted of 2 classes from an elementary school in Angeles and Mabalacat City. Anthropometrical characteristics were compared between groups using ANOVA. Pre-test and post-treatment body mass index percentiles and PA levels were compared using a paired t-test. First, there were no significant variance in the individuals’ anthropometrical characteristics between the two groups before intervention. Additionally, the blended learning group outperformed the online learning group on the post-test in terms of physical activity. After intervention, the mean BMI of the blended learning group decreased, but online students showed no improvement. Last but not least, when compared to the online learning group, the BMI percentile of the students in the blended learning group is within the usual range. The benefit of blended learning on the pupils’ physical composition was highlighted. Pupils’ levels of physical activity and body composition have improved as an outcome of the adjustment from traditional to online and blended learning settings. For the benefit of the students, it is advisable to make the most of a blended learning strategy and, if at all possible, return to the full face-to-face method.

Abstract

The TABATA workout has been praised in a number of research articles for its value to young adults. However, no research involving college students in the Philippines’ higher education context was located or carried out. The purpose of this research was to determine whether or not college students may benefit from the TABATA exercise program. Finally, it hoped to see if this exercise could assist reduce participants’ body mass index and waist circumference. Using an experimental design, this study examined the effects of a 10-week TABATA training program in repetition on college students. After the 10-week exercise performed by the participants in general, it was found that there is a reduction and improvement on participants’ BMI. Additionally, a significant improvement was observed in the participants’ WC. However, based on sex, no significant variance in both genders’ BMI. Fascinatingly, a significant improvement was observed in the WC of both sexes. Based on the general findings, participating in the TABATA program is effective and may partially improve students’ BMI and significantly enhance WC. To conclude, this study did not take into account other factors which may also affect the result of this study. Therefore, comparable experiments may be conducted while taking into account other variables aforementioned to this study’s limitation.

Abstract
Aim. To find out the association between the anthropometric measurement, the physical activity, psychosocial level and endometriosis. Materials and Methods. Thirty women diagnosed as endometriosis and 30 age matched non endometriosis women were recruited. Anthropometric measurement – Body Mass Index (BMI) and Waist hip ratio (WHR) was measured. International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and Beck Depression Inventory scale (BDI) were used to measure the physical activity level and the psychosocial level respectively. Results. There was a significant difference in BMI between the groups. The odds ratio and relative risk analysis of endometriosis showed that there is an association between increased BMI, WHR, BDI and the risk of endometriosis (p < 0.05). Conclusion. Increased Body mass index, Waist Hip Ratio and Beck depression score (BMI > 30, WHR > 0.85 and BDI > 16) are associated with increased risk of endometriosis.
