Abstract

A human hand is a highly specialized organ, with a wide range of functions. The aim of this report is to present physiotherapy treatment of the patient after surgery, which has resulted from an extensive injury to his hand, forearm and arm. During rehabilitation process, the ICF guidelines and the patient’s concerns, as well as his expected functional goals, have been observed. Intermediate therapy and irradiation phenomena, standard of the PNF concept, have allowed to minimize the risk of irritation of the grafted soft tissue and skin, and of damage to the internal connections within the coadunate areas of the hand and thumb. The report contains illustrations showing the stimuli applied, it also discusses other therapeutic actions, which had been employed.

A. Książek-Czekaj, M. Wiecheć, G. Śliwiński, Z. Śliwiński – Monitoring the results of scoliosis improvement using the DIERS system. FP 2016;16(3);124-134

Abstract

The aim of the study was to present a modern method of imaging the posture of the human body, namely, the DIERS Formetric 4D system. This method is used, among others, for non-invasive evaluation of the effects of treatment of patients diagnosed with scoliosis. Using the DIERS Formetric 4D device, the test of body posture can be done almost any time without the use of a temporary regime between studies. This allows assessment of both the effects of the treatment carried out in the short term, as well as the assumptions of the plan for further treatment.
According to the authors, the use of the DIERS Formetric 4D method to control the effects of scoliosis treatment is extremely important because of the possibility of frequent performance this test, its short duration and repeatability of the achieved results.  They are available very quickly and there is a possibility to compare them with the results of previous tests, thereby greatly facilitating the work of physiotherapists.

K. Załoga, G. Brzuszkiewicz-Kuźmicka, A. Kuźmicka, Z. Śliwiński – Kinesio Taping and its effect on weight distribution on feet after hallux valgus corrective surgery, assessed with the use of pedobaroscope FP 2016; 16(3); 50-57

Abstract
Introduction. Our foot, one of the most important elements of the human musculoskeletal system, is particularly vulnerable to a wide range of strains and injuries. One of the common foot health problems is hallux valgus. The treatment of hallux valgus may involve both preservative and surgical procedures.
Research goal. Kinesio Taping and its effect on weight distribution on feet and its validity as supportive therapy after hallux valgus corrective surgery.
Material and methods. The study comprised 32 patients after hallux valgus corrective surgery. The patients were tested on the ground reaction force platform. Mechanical correction taping on hallux valgus was applied. Results. The level of significance of the load values on the operated limb was calculated as well as the significance of the load on the forefoot of the operated limb; respectively: p = 0.44, p = 0.23. The calculated correlation coefficient of the load on the operated foot and the load on the forefoot of the operated foot, following the application of Kinesio Taping presented statistical significance at the level of p = 0.01.
Conclusions. Mechanical correction using Kinesio Taping can serve as an efficient support to the main therapy. It must be remembered, however, that it ultimately it cannot be used as the treatment substitution. The concluded research indicates that Kinesio Taping helps to restore the proper load distribution on a foot and supports putting more weight on the first foot radius. The most encouraging results were obtained in the tests in which both tapes were used during the treatment.

J. Darowska-Olszewska, Z. Śliwiński – Evaluation of Impact of the Application of Kinesio Taping and Standard Complete Decongestive Therapy on the Lymphedema in Women After Mastectomy. FP 2016; 16 (3); 18-32

Abstract
Introduction. The objective of this study has been to evaluate treatment results in the upper extremity on the side after surgery, in women after the mastectomy procedure, with the application of the Standard Complete Decongestive Therapy and the Modified Complete Decongestive Therapy, where the multilayer bandaging has been replaced with the lymphatic applications of the Kinesio Taping method. The above objective has been verified by testing the following hypotheses:
1. Lymphatic applications of the Kinesio Taping method can replace the multilayer bandaging.
2. Kinesio Taping techniques affect the range of motion in the shoulder joint.
3. Kinesio Taping applications reduce pain in the upper extremity, on the side after surgery.
Materials and Methods. Total number of 24 women after the unilateral mastectomy have been examined. The test group encompassed 12 patients, to whom the lymphatic Kinesio Taping techniques have been applied. The control group constituted of 12 patients, who have been treated with the multilayer bandaging. Both groups, over the period of 15 days, have been subjected to a 30-minutes manual lymphatic drainage procedure and to 20 minutes of rehabilitation exercises. Before and after the therapy, the upper extremity circumference has been measured using a centimeter tape. The shoulder joint range of motion has been measured with a goniometer. The pain level has been assessed according to VAS scale.
Results. Analysis of the obtained results show, that the lymphatic tape applications used reduce lymphedema and pain sensation, and increase the range of motion in the shoulder joint on the side after surgery, in women after the mastectomy procedure.
Conclusions. The applied Kinesio Taping techniques, when compared with the multilayer bandaging of the Complete Decongestive Therapy, bring about the comparable results.
