Mariola Wójcicka, Izabela Korabiewska, Jan Tylka – Quality of life of kidney transplant recipients. Fizjoterapia Polska 2007; 7(4); 409-418

Abstract
Background. Kidney transplantation is an acknownledged method of treatment of end-stage failure. Rehabilitation of kidney transplant aims to restore physical and mental fitness. This study set out to assess the relationship between kidney transplantation and quality of life and the relationship between participation in a rehabilitation programme and quality of life after kidney transplantation. Material and methods. The study involved 67 patients aged 17-73 years (x = 47.5 years) who were divided into a rehabilitated and control group. The quality of life was evaluated with the SF-36 questionnaire, which the patients completed twice to reflect their situation prior to transplantation (period of dialysis therapy) and one year after transplantation. Results. 1. Quality of life after transplantation was regarded as higher compared to the evaluation prior to the transplantation (p<0.05 for all scores) by the entrie patient population, by the rehabilitated group and the control group taken separately. 2. More positive changes were noted in the rehabilitated group. 3. A comparison of the results obtained in individual patients before and after the transplantation showed that: 25% of the patients reported no improvement in Global Quality of Life, including 15% reporting a worsening of Global QoL- almost 38% of the patients did not experience improvement in the general physical health domain- 27.6% did not experience positive changes in the general mental health domainConclusions. Kidney transplantation and participation in the rehabilitation programme positively influenced the patients’ subjective evaluation of the quality of life. About 1/3 of the kidney transplant recipients did not note any improvement in functioning.

Dariusz Białoszewski, Izabela Korabiewska, Monika Lewandowska, Katarzyna Wasiak – The Usefulness of Hippotherapy in the Rehabilitation of Cerebrally Palsied Children. Pilot Study. Fizjoterapia Polska 2011; 11(2); 175-181

Abstract
Zootherapy has been introduced in recent years as an adjunct approach to traditional physiotherapy in patients with cerebral palsy (CP). Hippotherapy is less popular in Poland compared to other European countries or the USA, with few reports of investigations carried out in accordance with the EBM paradigm. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the usefulness of hippotherapy in comprehensive rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy. The study involved 40 cerebrally palsied children who were randomly divided into two equal-sized groups (A and B). Both groups received home-based rehabilitation according to the Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) method. Group A additionally received hippotherapy. The children’s motor function was determined using the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM).In Group A was 0.02 for ChP=5.226, 1 df. The parameter determined in the study exceeded this critical value, thus allowing the conclusion that the effect of home-based rehabilitation combined with hippotherapy on overall health improvement was statistically significant (p<0.05). In Group B, the right-tailed critical value (p) was 0.429 for Chi2=0.625, 1 df. The parameter determined in the study did not exceed the critical value, thus not allowing the statement that home-based rehabilitation had a significant effect on overall health improvement.1. The study shows significantly better results of rehabilitation in children treated with combination of PNF and hippotherapy. 2. The results indicate the need for randomized prospective studies involving larger test groups.

Fizjoterapia Polska 2012; 12(2); 141-146

Abstract
Background. The parents’ satisfaction with life and their acceptance of their child’s illness are important factors that directly and / or indirectly influence the process of rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of hippotherapy on the level of satisfaction with life and acceptance of illness among parents of children with cerebral palsy. Material and methods. The study was conducted in 2008-2010 among 94 parents of cerebrally palsied (CP) children participating in hippotherapy sessions in Warsaw. The study used an original questionnaire with questions dealing with the effect of hippotherapy on selected psychological factors in the parents. The questionnaire was completed by the parents twice: before and after a one-year hippotherapy course. Two psychometric scales: the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and the Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS), were also used, both adapted for Polish by Juczyński. The results were analyzed statistically.Results. Overall satisfaction with life among the parents increased significantly (p<0.05) during the year-long hippotherapy course. There was also a statistically significant increase in the parents’ acceptance of their children’s condition. Conclusion. Hippotherapy in CP children significantly increases their parents’ satisfaction with life and acceptance of their children’s illness.

Abstract
Low back pain (LBP) is a common problem of pregnant women. The aim of the study was the assessment of the impact of classic massage on LBP among pregnant women. The group of 57 pregnant women was included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups. The women in Group 1 (n=28) were subjected to a series of classic massage treatments, performed by their partners (after instruction during antenatal classes). Women in Group 2 (n=29) did not change their lifestyle. The applied research tools were the following: The Numerical Pain Rating Scale (VAS), Roland-Morris Questionnaire, Spielberger’s Questionnaire and the authors’ tailored survey. Mann-Whitney U- test was used for comparison of the results between the groups. The minimum level of significance was set at p<0.05.After the series of treatments, the LBP (measured by VAS) was significantly lower in the research group (p=0.018). A positive impact of massage performed by the partner on the functional activity (p=0.041) as well as and on self-esteem and psychological state (p=0.014) was proved. 1. Massage reduces LBP in pregnant women. 2. Massage performed by pregnant women’s partners may favourably affect the women’s mental condition and improve their general well-being.

Abstract
Strumpell–Lorrain disease is a rare progressive disease also called hereditary spastic paraplegia. It is a genetic neurological disorder with a diverse course, characterized by usually very severe progressive spastic paresis of the lower limbs. It is one of the neurodegenerative diseases of the motor neuron.
The subject of the study was a 27-year-old woman with suspected hereditary spastic tetraplegia.
The subject experienced the first symptoms of the disease at the age of six. The patient’s parents observed toe walking and frequent falls due to improper foot placement.
Physiotherapeutic procedures were aimed at improving stability of the torso and functional improvement of the patient, including daily activities along with the extension of the time spent outside the bed. Improvement of her motor functions, including faster performance of activities in a shorter time.
Physiotherapy has a significant role in the treatment of patients with neuromuscular disorders. It applies to functional, physical, psychological and social aspects. Patients with this type of disease are very often lonely and unhappy, which affects their mental health. The possibility of participating in physiotherapeutic procedures means that such a person not only improves his/her physical condition; it also strongly affects mental health and improves functioning in society.

M. Kłoda, G. Brzuszkiewicz-Kuźmicka, E. Smolis-Bąk, I. Korabiewska, M. Lewandowska, D. Białoszewski – Diagnostics of Balance and Gait Disorders in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease. FP 2017; 17(2); 122-131

Streszczenie

Choroba Parkinsona (Parkinson’s disease – PD) jest przewlekłym, postępującym schorzeniem ośrodkowego układu nerwowego człowieka. Należy do chorób zwyrodnieniowych i dotyczy głównie układu pozapiramidowego, a w szczególności istoty czarnej śródmózgowia [1]. Poza osiowymi objawami choroby Parkinsona do najważniejszych należy zaliczyć zaburzenia postawy i chodu.
Są to m.in. analiza chodu przeprowadzana na bieżni typu „Zebris” FDM-TDM wykorzystująca system baz danych WinFDM-T, system Vicon 460 do trójwymiarowej oceny chodu, testy Timed Up & Go, 10 metrów czy Tinetti.
