Andrzej Lewandowski – Medical students from Bydgoszcz analyzed according to the typology of Adam Wanke. Fizjoterapia Polska 2002; 2(2); 122-127

Abstract
Background. The present study constitutes an effort to characterize the morphology of a group of young people selected for intellectual merit from various backgrounds and burdened by high exertion, primarily mental. Material and methods. We tested young people studying medicine and allied fields in Bydgoszcz during the academic year 1990/91. The somatic characteristics of the subjects are presented in summary form as a typological differentiation, using the typological system of Adam Wanke and Ewa Kolasa. The differentiated typological characteristics were compared to other groups of students in medical schools of longer academic tradition and to the general Polish populationResults. Among our subjects we found a preponderance of element I, while element H was the least represented. A slight difference was noted in the somatic structure of female students from medicine and pharmacy. The findings point to homogeneity in this group. We found considerable similarity to other groups of medical students and considerable differences in respect to the general population. Conclusions. Our results point to general equality in the level of physical development among students from Polish medical schools, the disappearance of the results of regional differentiation among persons studying medicine, and selectivity in the recruitment of students to medical schools.

Andrzej Lewandowski, Zygmunt Bilewicz, Mariusz Zasada, Ryszard Grucza – Body composition and movement co-ordination in physiotherapy students in Medical Academy of Bygoszcz – research report. Fizjoterapia Polska 2006; 6(2); 143-149

Abstract

Background. Physiotherapy imposes a considerable physical strain on physiotherapist’s organism and demands high endurance and skill. Up today, these elements have not been taken into account when students are recruited for physiotherapy. The aim of this study was to check a basic morphological characteristics and co-ordination ability in male and female students in Department of Physiotherapy of the Medical Academy in Bydgoszcz. There is a necessity, in these circumstances, of monitoring biosocial conditioning of successful education in the physiotherapist’s occupation and endeavours of creating its professional pattern. Material and methods. Research was conducted in 2001/02. 98 male and 154 female students of Physiotherapy and Physical Education were tested for body composition and co-ordination profile. The groups (marked by years and mode studies) were compared to detect possible differences in the body composition and the co-ordination skill. Results. It was found that despite of specific examine selection and different curricula the both groups of students did not differed in body composition nor in movement co-ordination. From the investigations of comparison it is noticeable that students of physiotherapy have the highest average body height — it also slightly higher from those studying the physical education. The results of the motive co-ordination test of the students attest however about considerable differentiation level of this motor propriety. Women students, as compared to women studying the physical education, have lower average result of the motive co-ordination test and like other students diverse level of this motor propriety. In relation to remaining women students, the future physiotherapists from Bydgoszcz do not differ significantly, however, they are characterized by imperceptibly higher average Rohrer’s coefficient. Conclusions. It was concluded that students of physiotherapy in the Medical Academy exhibited similar physical properties as students of physical education and that the former can fully perform the professional work in physiotherapy.

Diversity of body composition among female students of physiotherapy at the Medical University in Bydgoszcz

Andrzej Lewandowski, Ryszard Grucza – Diversity of body composition among female students of physiotherapy at the Medical University in Bydgoszcz. Fizjoterapia Polska 2007; 7(2), 171-178

Abstract

Background. Human motor abilities, and particularly occupational physical activity patterns, undergo constant changes in response to the progress of civilisation. A career as a physiotherapist may be associated with adaptation of the body to the increased exertion, leading to the development of particular types of body composition. However, it is also possible that the process of selection of applicants for physiotherapy studies or student identification with the physiotherapist community leads to such adaptation manifesting itself while the student is still at college. Material and methods. Ninety-three female students in their third year of Physiotherapy were examined during the years 2001-2003. The somatic characteristics of the students were determined and analysed using the typology system of Wanke and Kolasa. Results. The female physiotherapy students did not exhibit any characteristic types of body composition. Analysis of somatic characteristics revealed a preponderance of the I element while the contribution of the H element was the smallest. There were insignificant differences regarding somatic characteristics between years of study. Some similarity was detected between the physiotherapy students and female medical students. There were also some differences compared to characteristics shared by the general population of Polish women. Conclusions. The results indicate that the choice of studies and future careers in physiotherapy as well as being a physiotherapy student had little effect on the body composition of the females. There was a trace effect of the general sporting ability test taken at the entrance examination on the somatic composition of the future physiotherapists.

Andrzej Lewandowski, Martyna Wasielewska, Ryszard Grucza, Jacek Klawe, Paweł Zalewski – Selected types of work load of male physiotherapists in hospital setting. Fizjoterapia Polska 2010; 10(3); 234-241

Abstract
Background. Physical effort is part and parcel of the work of physiotherapists. The profession is generally associated with relatively strenuous physical work. Men and women perceive the level of physical load similarly. The present work aims to assess exercise loads associated with selected activities performed by physiotherapists working in the hospital setting.Material and methods. Three widely utilised standard therapeutic procedures were selected, namely: passive exercises, individual resistance exercises, and verticalisation and gait education. The study involved young men employed in hospital departments of rehabilitation and neurology. Their physical capacity was measured with the PWC170 exertion test; the intensity of physical effort was assessed indirectly by measuring the heart rate.Results. The male physiotherapists had low physical capacity (3.8 l/min ± σ = 0.63). The intensity of physical effort during the selected standard procedures was low, mean heart rate was HR 106.82 ± σ = 15.41, and maximal oxygen uptake was VO2max=56.60%. Nevertheless, physiotherapists subjectively perceived their duties as strenuous. The results of the present study showed that their work can be classified as strenuous, but only when the principles of hygiene and ergonomics are taken into consideration.Conclusions. Conclusions are drawn regarding the need to keep physiotherapists’ physical capacity at an appropriate level and to establish contraindications to perform standard therapeutic procedures associated with considerable physical effort.
