Abstract
Purpose. The current study aimed to assess the effect of Extracorporeal Shockwave in management of chronic anal fissure (CAF).
Methods. Twenty patients with CAF of both sexes; aged 18–50, and symptomatic for 6 months or more with therapies. Patients received Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), two sessions/week for 3 weeks. Visual analogue score (VAS) was used to measure pain intensity, Wexner constipation score was used to measure severity of constipation, as well as assessment of CAF healing by observation. Assessment were done before, after 3 weeks then after 3 months as a follow-up.
Results. The results revealed that means of VAS, Wexner constipation score and healing of CAF were significantly improved after 3 weeks of ESWT and after the follow-up period (P < 0.05).
Conclusions. Shock waves therapy may be considered as an effective conservative and safe modality in the treatment of CAF cases with respect to the short-term follow-up.
