Abstract
Background. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the popularity of alternative methods to trat lumbar discopathy among patients treated surgically for this discorder at the Neurosurgical Clinic of the Lublin Medical University in the period 1996-2000. Material and methods. The research involved 531 randomly selected patients referred for surgical treatment of lumbar discopathy. The patients were interviewed in depth, using an authorial questionnaire. The results were subjected to statistical analysis using the contingency table module of the STATISTICA software program (StatSoft, USA). Results. We found that 202 of the examined patients (38.04%) had undergone alternative therapy during the period of conservative treatment preceding surgery. The article discusses the number, course, and quality of procedures performed, and points to the health hazards resulting from the uncontrolled popularity of alternative medicine.
