Abstract
Background. One of often met complications in rehabilitation of patients after the apoplexy are functional disturbances of the shoulder joint on the side of paresis. Connected with it painfulness and limitation of mobility makes difficult re-education of the extremity’s function. The aim of this work is evaluation of the structures of shoulder joint in the paretic extremity and comparing it with the healthy joint, as well as determination of influence of rehabilitation procedure on improvement of changes of the examined structures. Material and methods. In a group of 40 patients ultrasonographic examination was used to evaluate the shoulder joint. All patients, who in a period since December 2000 to March 2001 were hospitalised at the Rehabilitation Department of the Provincial Hospital No. 2 in Rzeszów, were directed to this examination. This examination was done twice: on the first and last day of the patient’s stay at the Rehabilitation Department. Results and conclusions. Observations during three-four weeks’ stay showed regression of pathological changes in the shoulder joint.

Height body mass, and physical fitness in girls and boys with and without posture defects in the former province of Rzeszów, Poland

Abstract
Background. The purpose of our study was to evaluate differences in the growth and physical fitness of school-age children and youth, with and without posture defects, in the former voivodeship of Rzeszów, Poland Material and methods. The research involved 3117 children of both sexes, ranging in age from 7 to 14 years, enrolled in 44 primary schools during the period 1996-1997. The children were divided into two groups, those with posture defects and those without. The examinations were performed by visual (descriptive) inspection. Posteriorly, we evaluated the carriage of the head, shoulders, shoulder blades, and pelvis, and the type of feet (acc. to Bochenek); anteriorly – carriage of the shoulder line, waist triangles, and carriage of the knees; laterally – carriage of the head and shoulders and the curvature of the spine. A characterization of the particular posture defects will be the topic of a separate study. Results. The average height and body mass of boys and girls without defects are greater than in children with defects. In exercises to measure physical fitness, children without posture defects obtained better results than those with defects. Conclusions. The results confirmed the working hypothesis that there are differences in the growth and physical fitness of girls and boys with and without posture defects. In order to reduce differences in physical fitness between children and youth with and without posture defects, measures should be taken in the schools to prevent posture defects and detect them earlier; check-ups and correctional measures should be made available for children in school or in a Posture Defects Outpatient Clinic.

Abstract

Background. Functional disorder of the shoulder joint on the paretic side is among the more common post-stroke complications. Rehabilitation can be hindered by the associated pain, limited joint mobility, and muscle distension during the period of flaccid paresis (or plegia). The purpose of our study was to evaluate certain shoulder joint structures in post-stroke patients in inpatient rehabilitation, to compare the structural image of the shoulder joint in the affected and healthy limbs, and to identify the impact of rehabilitation on the tested joint structures. Material and methods. In a group of 40 post-stroke patients we performed ultrasonographic examination of the shoulder joints. The study group included patients who were hospitalized from December 2000 to March 2001 in the Department of Rehabilitation at Voivodeship Hospital no. 2 in Rzeszów, Poland. Examinations were performed on the first and last day of hospitalization. Results. Pathological changes were found in the shoulder joints. Over a 3-4-week rehabilitation period some improvement was noted. Conclusions. Changes in shoulder joint structure in post-stroke patients with hemiparesis occur more often on the paretic side (esp. thinning of the rotator cone, the deltoid muscle, and the tendon of the long head of the shoulder biceps, calcification, subluxation in the shoulder joint, and fluid in the bursae). Comprehensive hospital rehabilitation has a positive impact on the tested shoulder joint structures. Ultrasonography is a good method for evaluation of the anatomical structures of the shoulder joint in patients with hemiparesis.

Abstract
lmproved morbidity rates and prognosis in cancer are the result of improvement in prophylaxis, early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment, including rehabilitation, which is emphasised by many authors. Further treatment following brain tumor surgery requires a multidirectional approach that includes comprehensive rehabilitation. Its goal is to prevent complications and the development of dysfunctions in successive stages of cancer treatment, to manage complications and dysfunctions resulting from the treatment of primary disease, and even in terminal disease. At present, considerable attention is paid to functional sequelae of tumor treatment rather than only to the treatment of primary disease. Psychotherapy is an essential part of comprehensive rehabilitation of patients with malignant disease. The paper presents the stages of rehabilitation of these patients, taking into consideration hospital treatment, and community rehabilitation at the patienfs place of residence, at rehabilitation clinics and even in health resort hospitals. Community or outpatient rehabilitation serves to preserve continuity of rehabilitation. For some patients, occupational rehabilitation represents a vital element in the comprehensive management, affording the possibility of fuli social integration, including the return to normal life. Rehabilitation can also be conducted in patients with terminal disease, especially in order to alleviate pain, reduce dyspnea, reduce lymphedema and improve psychological comfort.
