Abstract

Aim: The aim of this paper is to analyse the attitudes of physiotherapists towards mentally disabled children and to analyse the influence of their attitudes on their anxiety level.
Method: The study comprised 67 respondents; 37 students of physiotherapy and 30 physiotherapists who work in special care centres. Both research groups were asked to fill out an STAI Questionnaire which determines the level of anxiety as a state and anxiety as a trait, as well as author’s original questionnaire (Scale of Attitudes of Physiotherapists Towards Mentally Disabled Children).
Results: Both research groups present positive attitudes towards mentally disabled children. The research indicates that a more positive attitude towards mentally disabled children is presented by physiotherapists who work in special care centres, as compared to the other research group. A higher level of anxiety as a state is experienced by the students of physiotherapy.
Conclusions: Anxiety may influence the attitudes of physiotherapists toward mentally disabled children. It may be inferred that the higher the score of assessment of positive attitude towards mentally disabled children, the lower the level of anxiety in physiotherapists and students of physiotherapy.

Z. Śliwiński, M. Śliwa, M. Starczyńska, W. Kiebzak – Quality of life in patients with lumbar spinal pain. FP 2014; 14(2); 26-39

Abstract

In recent years, increasing attention has been drawn to the need of a holistic approach to patients. Studies involving the measurement of the quality of life and taking into consideration not only the physical, but also emotional and spiritual aspects of well-being, have been conducted with increasing intensity over the last few decades. In case of disorders as common as spinal pain syndromes, the measurement of the intensity of pain is particularly important, as these diseases are a scourge for the developing societies. The goal of this study was to present and popularize data on the quality of life. The study included 38 subjects (23 females and 15 males) complaining of lumbar spinal pains. The study group was diverse in many aspects, including age distribution. The studies revealed different levels of quality of live impairment depending on the degree of impairment as the result of the disease. Conclusions based on the survey demonstrate the need to include the quality of life in the rehabilitation process. Measurements of the quality of life provide much information on the patient, their attitude to the disease as well as the rehabilitation process.

Abstract
Introduction. The objective of this study has been to assess the effectiveness of the physiotherapy in patients with the coxarthrosis, treated in Spa facilities. Materials and Methods. The study involved 49 patients (29 women and 20 men), who have been treated in the “Słowacki” Spa in Busko-Zdrój, during their 21 days rehabilitation stay. The patients have had degenerative changes in the hip joint, which have not been surgically treated. The patients have been divided into two groups. To the study group (24 persons) the physiotherapy treatments have been applied. In the control group (25 persons), in addition there has been the kinezytherapy applied. Each of the patients has gone through: questionnaire survey, measurement of the range motion in the hip joints, muscle strength evaluation with the Lovett scale, assessment of the pain severity in the VAS scale, functional tests (Linder 2, abdominal compression test, Patrick Faber test, SLR, Tinetti test,”Up & Go” test, gait analysis according to Perry). Results. After the 21-day rehabilitation treatment, the majority of patients have shown a significant decrease in the subjective pain sensation, a significant improvement of the hip motion functions and a reduced risk of the patient falling down. The carried out research has indicated, that better results have been achieved in the control group, where the kinezytherapy treatment has been applied in addition. Conclusions. 1. Physiotherapy has an impact on increasing the hip joint range of motion, in all directions, particularly in the flexion an abduction movements. 2. The rehabilitation procedure improve the gait stereotype in patients with the osteoarthritis of the hip joint. 3. The Spa rehabilitation therapy reduces the risk of falling down in patients with degenerative changes in the hip joints.
