Abstract
Objective. The main objective of this study was to determine the effect of wearing a Chêneau brace on the quality of life of patients with idiopathic scoliosis.
Methodology. The study used a short questionnaire that consisted of 12 questions – 4 questions about demographics and 8 questions about quality of life. The investigated aspects of life included difficulty in performing daily activities, feelings of embarrassment, sleep discomfort, irritability, and patients’ perceived benefits of this treatment procedure. Questionnaires were filled during follow-up visits. The study was conducted on a group of 30 patients aged 9–16 years treated for at least 6 months. Among the respondents there were 22 females and 8 males.
Results. Despite the small study group, the results of the statistical analysis confirmed the hypothesis that the brace significantly affects the quality of life of patients and has a greater impact on the quality of life of the female gender due to the disruption of aesthetics and the associated sense of shame. An association was observed between the sense of shame related to wearing a brace and the desire to “hide” the brace under clothing, as well as the perception of the benefits of wearing a brace and a lower sense of shame.
Conclusion. In the processes of rehabilitation and treatment of the patient with idiopathic scoliosis, a holistic approach that considers not only activities related directly to physiology, but also to patients’ well-being and quality of life is important.

Abstract
Background. The SpineCor method, the effectiveness of which is evaluated in the present paper, was introduced to Poland two years ago and has been used in few centres. The present paper evaluates the effects of dynamic bracing over a period of two years. Material and methods. The subjects were 121 children undergoing treatment at the Paediatric Rehabilitation Hospital in Radziszów. Parameters analysed included Cobb’s angles (radiographic), the Risser test and a clinical evaluation of spinal rotation before and immediately after the placement of the brace, and at one year after placement. Results. Clinical evaluations and a classification based on the SpineCor Assistant System (SAS) revealed a predominance of right-sided thoracic (RT) scoliosis (47.3%), particularly type III (RT3) (24.7%). Significant differences between means after the application of the SpineCor brace were shown in Cobb’s angles in the primary and secondary arches and in clinical rotation. There was a high correlation between Cobb’s angle progression in the primary arch and the Risser test (r=0.46), time from brace placement to first menstruation (PM), r=0.33, and regularity of follow-up (r=0.43). Conclusions. The results indicate a significant change in the clinical parameters of sciolosis following the application of a SpineCor brace as regards halting the progression of the scoliosis angle and reduction in clinical rotation of vertebrae. A reduction in Cobb’s angle within a year of placement of a SpineCor brace was recorded in 7-10-year-old children. Progression or no change in Cobb’s angle was seen in those aged 11-12 years and those older than 17 years of age.

S. Trzcińska, W. Kiebzak, M. Wiecheć, Z. Śliwiński – Compensation Mechanism in Treatment of Idiopathic Scoliosis with the FED Method – Preliminary Results. FP 2017; 17(2); 6-14

Abstract

Introduction. The idiopathic background of scoliosis makes it difficult to treat the disorder in a cause and effect way. This gives a starting point for creation of many physiotherapy treatment methods, among them the FED method. It is a new, but a very promising way of the conservative treatment for scoliosis.
Research Goal. The assessment of impact of the FED treatment for reducing the angle of the primary curve (KTR P) and the secondary curve (KTR W) rotation, and the overall rotation of the spine (SDR).
Materials and Methods. In the research participated girls 11 to 15 years old (M = 13.5 ±1.4), with the diagnosed double curve scoliosis of the second degree. In all the patients, there were carried out measurements of the angle of trunk rotation in the primary curve, secondary curve, cervical segment and the scoliosis coefficient was measured with a Zebris apparatus. There was also analyzed the sum of two rotations (SDR) parameter. The above examinations were performed before and after the three week treatment with the FED method.
Results. After the application of the FED treatment method, we have observed statistically significant decrease in the average value of the trunk rotation angle at the levels of primary curve, secondary curve and cervical segment. Similar observations were made in the case of the scoliosis coefficient in Zebris examination. All the examined parameters have shown a significant decrease in the average output values (p < 0.001).
Conclusions. Treatment of double curve scoliosis with the application of the FED method, for the period of 3 weeks, leads to reduction of the rotation angle of the trunk. This reduction applies to both, the primary and secondary curve, the overall rotation angle and the cervical segment. The FED therapy improves the total rotation of the whole spine. In the course of treatment, there occurs decrease in the angle of vertebrae rotation in the cervicothoracic segment.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the respiratory efficience therapy of patients with 2nd grade idiopathic scoliosis. The study was conducted at the Centre for Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation for Children and Youth in Konstancin-Jeziorno, Mazowieckie’s Rehabilitation Center “STOCER”. The study comprised 60 patients with diagnosed 2nd grade idiopathic scoliosis at the age of 8-17 years. The observation period lasted four weeks. The subjects were divided into two groups, study and control of 30 persons. In both groups implemented kinesiotherapy program, and the study group was additionally applied the efficiency of respiratory therapy. The tests were performed using a spirometer Micro Plus, by means of it was setted three parameters: FVC, FEV1, PEF. Results: In the test group, there was an increase in all parameters, compared to the baseline measurement. In the study group and the control there was a statistical increase in all studied parameters, only PEF’s improvement was not statistically significant. In the study group there was more increase in the level of the analyzed variables than in the case of persons belonging to the control group. Conclusions: Respiratory therapy improves lung function parameters in patients with 2nd grade idiopathic scoliosis becoming an important element in a comprehensive physiotherapy program. The use of respiratory kinesiotherapy in children with 2nd grade idiopathic scoliosis contributes to the improvement of all indicators, including significantly FEV1 and FVC.
